What time of day was it, Lurker? That alone says a lot.

I mean if it was 2:am, the guy was in his way home...

If it was mid-day, he started early. Nothing else to do these days.

Agree with YT I've seen it in Europe, mostly parents with kids who couldn't hold it off of a highway.

She... Guanyin.

Can’t quite figure out what she is holding in this somewhat non traditional version.

thanks. i'm dimly aware of buddhism, more of an ethical system than a religion. it looks to me like a branch with flowers in the right, and a peach in the left hand. i'm especially impressed by how naturally flowing the garment appears given that the medium is concrete.
a couple of times a week i walk the dog around town and take pictures of cats, which i sometimes post to my FB page in a sort of "where's waldo" game. she just sort of got swept up in all the confusion. there's a lot of very peculiar yard and porch art here, some of it i think is not strictly representational: flying frogs, plastic and concrete dragons, sheet-metal armadillos, that sort of thing.

Peach is a common theme in Chinese ethno-religious artwork but not common in the context of Guanyin. In Buddhist imagery the objects are specific to the deity and hold significance. That is why I was hesitant in suggesting what that object in sculpture was because, as you say it certainly does look like a peach (or heart), instead linked to the article for possible insight. It could just be a modern (loose) interpretation of a Guanyin statue.

Peaches are symbolic of good health/longevity to the Chinese. You often see old men or cherubs holding peaches.

maybe you have an opinion about which side of the himalayas buddhism started, india or china?.

i dunno, it's concrete, i assume they start with an original carving to make the molds, but i don't necessarily expect a whole lot of accuracy. i was surprised when you said she was female, because there's not a hint of a suggestion of breasts, and from what i've seen of buddhist art, they're not shy about such things, and neither are the people who make the castings.

and yes, there were cats. here, the rare 3 in 1.two on left on the sidewalk, one on right on the porch. there was a fourth, sorta siamese-looking, but ran under the house
LUGO1905.JPG
there were more, but that's enough for today.

In scandinavian countries Lurker would be considered the rude weird party here. I know in Norway they just don't stare at each other.

In fact when they pull over along side a road and relieve themselves most of them don't even bother to turn their backs.
Fennoscandian here, also not a big deal. Then again we tend to go from a sauna to a lake completely naked even when there are neighbors near. What is rude is if the neighbor looks too long. Creepy is taking pics.

Regarding Buddhism, consider that humans often feel the grass is greener on the other side whereas the rabbit (as your photo suggests) always is just IN the greener grass. Does that mean the rabbit is the more enlightened being? -No. There is a difference between unconsciously ending up in the lush grass because of instinct (like hunger) and consciously choosing to be there. Between those two states of “grassiness” there grows discernment, possibly some dissatisfactions experienced by our mind because of an innate desire for greener grass. Consciously following the intellect eventually leads us to the “right place”, which is not a place on either side of the fence at all because you realize you are no longer the rabbit needing grass for nourishment but are both the rabbit and the grass together.

But to more directly answer your question, the teachings and practice of Buddhism historically was established in the Indian side of the Himalayas, in the town of Sarnath.

my grandfather's parents came to the US from sweden around 1890 to get away from europe. can't say i blame them, europeans seem to make a mess wherever they go, and are not above shitting in their own nest.
