colombus day, 1492

Post by lurker »

immigrants begin coming to the americas without permission from the people already here. this 500 years after erik the red in greenland and nova scotia, and 20,000 after that bering strait land bridge thing. before that, no humans. giant ground sloths, mammoths. oh, wait, that can't be right, that's not in the book written by middle-eastern shepherds. my point? none, i guess.

As a 2nd generation Italian American, I prefer to think of Oct.12th or whatever day they move it to as "Native American Remembrance Day".
He might not have realized what he was unleashing on the natives of this hemisphere, but he should have realized taking them as slaves was wrong.

Columbus first landed in The Bahamas....

Had I been Christopher searching for a faster way to the far east I would have turned around after 3 months at sea heading west. Seems like and undercover operation.

Fuck Columbus.

I think Italian Americans need a new cultural hero holiday. Coming together around Colombus was part of the 20th century project of becoming accepted in to whiteness. As a Jew, whose family comes from an Italian/Jewish neighborhood, I really understand how that was an important way to address discrimination.

I also think as assimilated immigrants, we owe the most to the immigrants facing the shit we faced and to the native and black peoples whose abject position our assimilation failed to adequately question.

I’m not Italian. It’s not my place to lobby for a particular replacement for Columbus as a cultural icon, but off the top of my head, Sacco and Vanzetti are Italian American heroes I admire, as is Frank Serpico. Italian Americans deserve better than a Swiss-looking blonde Genovese in funny pants.

No American connection? Not to my political taste, but I really didn’t mean to start this sort of conversation and won’t continue it.

Sacco and Vanzetti would.certainly get my vote, but I doubt if I represent a very large percent of Italian Americans. Vanzetti's writiings while in prison are more like those of a poet than a convicted murder.
I'm not certain there needs to be an American connection,
the Irish have done pretty well with St. Patrick as an example.

i don't believe that someone need be pure to be admired. though jefferson and madison were slaveholders, still i respect their accomplishments wrt the democratic republican form of government.
