Day job/career/gun funder

What do you guys do for work? I've been in the electrical industry for over a decade now, and since going union 7 years ago wouldn't consider going back unless I was to open my own shop. I'd like to get into solar in the future and would like to install my own array on my house except for the fact I have less than ideal conditions for one, too much shade without cutting down neighbors' trees.

Retired guy...handle everything my wife doesn't, which is, pretty much everything since she's not retired. Also Mr. Fixit of, well, almost everything.

Do you have a lot of wind? There are all sizes and capacities of wind generators, some portable and some non-directional vertical ones. People who sail frequently use smaller ones to charge their batteries. People use starter motors for home-made ones that put out 12 volts, other are more sophisticated. Seems to me, that other than the mounting issues, the electrical issues of wind generators are about the same as solar.

Paralegal...just changed jobs, which is stressful. I don't think my old firm could weather corona without layoffs. Went from administrative license defense to PI. Big change.

I've also been a political consultant, PR flak, lobbyist and licensed chicken cook (valid in Oregon only).

Recording engineer and record producer. It's exciting and rewarding work most days, and I get to meet lots of interesting people and travel enough to keep me on my toes. I've never really considered doing anything else, it's all I've really been interested in since I was 16 years old. If I ever went deaf I could fall back on coding, I've always had a sixth sense with computers and loved programming in old TI-Basic on my graphing calculators back in the day.

Well, I was a casino employee until I became unemployed yesterday afternoon.

If this virus doesn't get resolved by summer, me and a lot of people like me are royally screwed.

Are they TOTALLY screwing you or giving you SOME compensation? Sounds like they run casinos the way Trump does (into the ground).

So sorry! Mandatory retirement sucks.

My girl deals poker in a casino. They're not shut down yet but they will be soon, and with the number of cases growing in our county I don't blame her for not wanting to be there right now, casinos tend to attract some of the most disgusting people society has to offer. There's no word from her company yet (Cesar's) what the plan is if they have to shut their doors for a month or more. And being a dealer, most of her income is tips. I'm financially stable enough to float us through just about anything, but it's still scary, and I feel for her co-workers who mostly live paycheck to paycheck. People aren't understanding yet how bad this is gonna get if the government doesn't step in and start giving people what is essentially a UBI through this. Millions unemployed, who knows how many foreclosures, skyrocketing homeless rate, small businesses shuttering their doors left and right. And then there's gonna be the aftermath. The only company hiring around here right now is Amazon. We'll be moving back towards the coal mining days of everyone working for the company for a pittance and then only shopping at the company store. But people will do it to survive.

And you can't deal wearing gloves...At least in black jack only the dealer touches the cards...but the players touch the chips. Unless they come up with an electronic chip system, that's too dangerous now.

Mt Airy Lodge on a Saturday night, last time we were there, was definitely filled with low lifes, loud thugs, many of whom may well have been involved in less than legal enterprises.

The short answer is Correctional Officer, but the more complete answer is that I stepped into this at age 60. When I was younger I was a pretty high flying accountant, then I started a trucking company that specialized in moving boats. Semi-retired at age 40 and motorcycled a lot. Somewhere along the lines I spent 6 years doing network management for a small business in Florida, started 2 publishing companies, worked as a manager in several industries, and taught in the local school system.

My post could have been a good deal clearer. I'm not laid off or fired, there's just no work to go into. Once this gets resolved in some fashion, I'll be back to work. Until then there's Unemployment insurance, I suppose. Y'know, I really thought I was past the day when I'd have to file a claim.

But yeah, the further into the summer this goes, the more this town is going to be in a lot of pain. Summer is our bread and butter...and new guns.

I was with a company over 16 years. The founder sold it, listed me as one of the key personnel, and 5 months later I was called in and told they were ending my position. And there I was, on unemployment. It was April 2009 and Obama was faced cleaning up the HUGE mess Dubya left. The new owners ran the company into the ground in just over a year, closing in the summer of 2010. It was truly a situation that sucked.

I invite you to check out the MidWest Renewable Energy Association. They are a great organization and can certify Renewable energy installers. They also have the world's largest renewable energy fair.
