Here is an example of the difference between conservation and preservation.
Many anti-hunters in this country are motivated by distaste for killing and empathy for individual animals. Conservationists don't think in terms of individual animals, they think in terms of protecting the species as a whole and helping it thrive.

Some years ago there was a Danish zoo that had a young giraffe that was surplus to its needs (no room) and was deemed unsuitable for breeding. Outrage (outside of Denmark) ensued because they killed a baby giraffe and fed it to the lions at the zoo.
The Danes (Viking stock that they are) shrugged because it's not about individual animals, it's about keeping the species healthy and thriving. No room for an excess of sentimentality here.

I don't understand: I thought most of the big cats in the US were all either endangered or near-endangered and shouldn't be hunted at all. Unlike most bear species outside of polar bears.

(Incidentally it's been recently discovered that grizzlies and polars are sub-species of the same specie of bear and are fully capable of interbreeding. Pizzlies and Grolars are appearing as their environments are overlapping)

Humane movements range from protecting animals from abuse to the kooky views of PETA. I even knew one PETA person who refused to use mousetraps, willing to tolerate mouse shit on her kitchen counters. Needless to say, neither my wife nor I would eat ANYTHING she prepared! She was a friend of a friend, not a friend. There's an article in today's NYT about great ape smuggling.

mountain lions are "least concern" according to the IUCN. The main concern for apex predators aside from not being able to find a mate, is disease.

I used to be an animal rights activist. When they started talking about 'hunt disruptions' I decided that that was a good way to get my ass shot. At the same time, hunters would show up at our meeting and want to be an "unsettling influence." But it sort of came to a head for me while volunteering as an escort at the abortion clinic. People protested me, just like I protested them. Same deal as my LGBT work. So I decided to live and let live. I may speak out against it, but that's as far as I will go.
I also know there is an attitude about hunting makes me uncomfortable. It's called buck fever. All the emergency rooms have to put on extra staff on the first day of deer season. And most hunters feel that farmers, hikers, etc should stay indoors if they don't want to get shot.
OK getting off my soapbox.
Now about those mice. I have a live trap and release them in a park. And I've been a vegetarian for 43 years.

Just in case you weren't aware of this development:

They use peas proteins reorganized into meat.

I was raised vegetarian, but became an Opportunivore as soon as I was able to make that decision for myself (which much to my parents chagrin was somewhere in middle School). I still enjoy vegetarian food sometimes though, and have eaten the burger-like product linked above. There's a chain called BurgerFi that has it as an option. Actually really, really good. Not like any of the other veggie patties available until now. Surprisingly meaty.

ETA: Also, now there are other companies getting in on the idea. I think it originated in silicon valley.

I like that quote! Unfortunately some people didn't get the memo. Those same people are the reason I'd like to live in a cabin in the woods lol
