31General. The expensive world of HF radios.
You can talk to England form a lakeside in New Hampshire and Australia from Arizona. All with a backback radio weighing 5 lbs.

36Why would I need to be anonymous in regards to my HAM identity? Serious question.GuitarsandGuns wrote:Not if you want anonymity.
Re: Attention Amatuer Radio operators
37Nevermind, I totally get your reasoning now - because with my call sign you can look up my real name and address. While I could care less about you knowing my name (Hi, I'm Zach), my exact address is another thing entirely...

38Posting to ham forums is one thing. No one wants to steal ham gear.
Posting to the "I have 20 million in gold bars in my garage" forum and saying "and my call sign is." Might get unwanted visitors.

42I learned CW back in the '70s while a teenager. Still pretty comfortable at 25 to 30 WPM.
I let my license lapse while in the AF, then got it back in the '90s. I guess I could join the ARRL again if needed.

Re: Attention Amatuer Radio operators
43Received my Technician Class call sign a couple days ago, but don't really have anyone in range to talk to with my 2 meter handheld. Who's got a 6 meter they wanna sell me so I can communicate to you guys outta state?
Re: Attention Amatuer Radio operators
44there are repeaters in the San Fran area.
Some of them use the internet to re-transmit somewhere else.
I'm not so sure about the range of 6 meters. Long distance HF requires Ionispheric bounce. So it skips, there are zones you can't get and it varies during the year.

Re: Attention Amatuer Radio operators
45My understanding is that the 6 meter band is often called the "magic band" because it can have the propagation characteristics of HF and reach international distances. Also, I can use it with my current license...

46Congrats on getting your ticket I got mine right after they created the no code tech . Haven't been on the air in years but still keep my license current.

I think it's a cool idea. I think I may have something that will work that band.
