Certainly not. Zombies have only one hit die and can turned by a level one cleric, whereas mummies have 8 hit dice and need a high level cleric to turn them.

Huh. That idea has never occured to me. I suppose it could be the case for some people but I just don't see it being a common thing.

true. different thing entirely. being bitten by a mummy does not make you a mummy. kids nowadays, i swear! don't they teach this stuff in school anymore?

zombie movies are certainly about "the other" but the only one that (to me) spoke directly to the racism issue was the original "night of..". what your average zombie apocalypse prepper wannabe makes of it is another thing entirely.

I always took it as an anti-consumerist, anti-capitalist message of the indoctrinated turned into mindless ravenous drones, but I can see an argument for a racist “otherizing” angle.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) - the one in the shopping mall - had a sideplot with the main cast trying to help a guy holed up in a gun store, but with no food. Kind of a sideways swipe at some of the preppers who emphasise their guns and ammo above everything else.

slow zombie request seconded.
i am legend. i read the book, then saw the old vincent price movie, and then the one with what's-his-name. i am legend was sort of highbrow compared to the other movies.

i suspect that what we're getting at with this thread is that there's nothing that unusual about lefty or centrist prepping, the main differences being approach (guns vs butter) and the source of the threat (radicals left, right, and/or supernatural, natural disaster, etc.) in other words, yes, buy guns and ammo but don't forget water, a medkit and mre's.

No zombies, but if you want a real downer of a book (and a great reason to prep), read The Road. Holy shit was that depressing to read as a parent. Movie was ok, but nowhere near the book (as usual).

I am Legend was Will Smith. He actually pulled off a pretty good performance considering he was the only actor for 80 percent of the movie.

Ya don't have to look at it like that.
Just think that you're planning for any time in your future that you lose your job or finances are tight, that's all.
Or your neighbors are having a tough time and you can leave a bag of canned goods on their doorstep.

Here ya go. It was a long time ago and I had a different user name.

From my experience (living in the home of The Walking Dead), the typical right-wing fantasy is that "zombies" are a stand-in for the "human wave" of urban liberals looking to loot and steal food. They believe they will be the "unprepared" and poorly armed (or unarmed) city dwellers (often poor minorities). They are the "other". They are "them" and not "us". They are dehumanized like refugees at the border. They are just targets, not men, women, and children. Like the refugees, they are coming to kill you.

It is all the same theme. Be afraid. They are coming for you. They are Democrats and Socialists (basically just Communists). They are brown, black, or liberal whites. They don't believe in your God or your way of life. When they say "zombies", everyone knows who they really mean.

Yes, if GoFundMe doesn't work, the people don't really want it.

Another note to this thread. One of the biggest (and darkest) reasons I have preparations is collapse (and no, you can't prep yourself out of it, but for those of us living with one foot in this world and one in the future world trying to decide when to jump, it may give the ability to transition when systems fail). You can define collapse any way you want. My personal definition goes something like this: 7.6 billion people (as of 2018, subject to exponential revision upward) are consuming this world. Our geopolitical systems seem to be heading away from stable democracies and/or stable communism and toward fascism, dictators and nationalism. Our world is increasingly driven by policies that favor the few at the expense of the many, largely due to the injection of money by the wealthy to control the outcomes. Our darling media (both sides of it) is largely controlled by several of those players and we're left to our own to dig for truth. Our world's largest currently available energy source, fossil fuels, is finite and directly responsible for climate change. Climate change is resulting in a mass extinction event and pushing the earth toward a climate modern humans have not lived in. Our water, transportation and agricultural systems are entirely based on stasis within the norm and cannot account for climate change in the temporal or spacial scope climate change will require (i.e., shit's changing too fast to adapt).

Here's a light hearted article that gets at this. When we consider this, that or the other crisis, it is alarming. When we try to tie all of those crises together, we get a "holy shit" moment. I'll note that the linked article misses many other "holy shit" events that should enter into consideration, including bee die off and its impact to the natural world and human agriculture, bat die off in North America (it's not just happening in Australia), salmon collapse, fisheries collapse, expansion of wild fires, expansion of drought/flood cycles, coral bleaching, collapse of the Arctic sea ice, pending collapse of the Antarctic, disruptions of the jet stream, and on and on and on.

The title is apt. Collapse is already here and has been for some time. Not to be all doomery but, discuss. :fishing:

rome was in decline for a long time before atilla showed up at the gates. it took 4 or 5 hundred years after the republic became the empire before the end. things change more quickly now, but the wealthy can stay ahead of it for a couple more generations. the rest of us will just have to suck it up. i'm already pretty sure i don't want to live in the future world i think i see coming, though more for the social aspects than the environmental. kids walking around glued to their smartphones. now they offer little silicone credit-card wallets to stick on your phone, and the capability exists to read the card without physical contact with the reader, so it's just a matter of time before it makes sense to just have a chip implanted and be done with the hassle. i've got most likely 20 years left, at best, being optimistic maybe 30, so it won't be too bad in my time. best of luck to you kids, sorry i couldn't leave you a better world
