a little something for ammo nerds - 45-70

Post by lurker »

this is the ammo box and rounds the seller included with my trapdoor. i have no idea whether any of the ammo originally came in this box. i notice the cases are dimpled rather than crimped, never seen this before.

Except for the two Westerns, those appear to be all military cases. I think the F is Frankford Aresenal (later they used FA) but I'm not sure. Should be pretty easy to find online. US military headstamp stuff is well documented. The two digit numbers are the years of manufacture.

I have seen staked bullets rather than crimped before, but maybe only on .30-06 dummy rounds?

thanks, y'all, i knew i could count on you!
i've looked at a lot of 45-70 stuf in the last day or so, some folks selling individual (i assume special in some way) rounds for over $20 a piece. :wtf:
there was apparently a 45-55 round for the carbine, less powder but identical in appearance except a "C" in headstamp.
here's what i have:
Western 45-70 (no date, staked)
Western 45-70 (no date, staked)
F 4 94
F 8 94
F 1 95
F 1 95
F 1 95
F 6 96
F 6 96
F 97 <--- month missing or illegible.
F 3 97
F 4 97
F 5 97
still researching information on the remington box and the western cartridges.
