Democrats Plan to Pursue Most Aggressive Gun-Control Legislation in Decades
WASHINGTON—Democrats say they will pass the most aggressive gun-control legislation in decades when they become the House majority in January, plans they renewed this week in the aftermath of a mass killing in a California bar.

Their efforts will be spurred by an incoming class of pro-gun-control lawmakers who scored big in Tuesday’s midterm elections, although any measure would likely meet stiff resistance in the GOP-controlled Senate.

A reputable UK source for those who cannot get around the WSJ paywall:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... House.html
However with the Thousand Oaks, California mass shooting where 12 people died just the day after the midterms, politicians have suggested they'll be aggressively pursuing action to enforce tougher gun control.

'This new majority is not going to be afraid of our shadow,' California Democrat, Mike Thompson, told the Wall Street Journal. 'We know that we've been elected to do a job, and we're going to do it.'
Others keen for change include Jason Crow of Denver - who has been vocal about the mass shootings at Columbine High School and the Aurora, Colorado movie theater - and former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger. The Virginia woman supports a ban on certain firearms with military-style features.

Thompson should know, being from California, that the nation's toughest gun laws have failed to prevent mass shootings here.

How's about we focus on the right to health care instead, Mike? Or a living wage? Or ensuring a livable climate for the future? Or something other than restricting rights.

Yes, states and gun control doesn't work, people just bring in weapons, extended magazines ... from neighboring states just look at IL and Chicago in particular. Democrats will be pissing in the wind just like Republicans did every time they voted to repeal the ACA, it never worked. Republicans will just use it against Democratic candidates in red states in 2020.

There are so many better ways to spend their time, like investigating EVERYTHING Trump. They HOPE to take the Senate in 2020. I don't see how. There aren't that many even potentially flippable seats coming up...but if they follow the Beto, Stacey, Andrew paradigm of registering NEW voters for Dems NOW...they may do it.

Optics and gridlock, CDFingers. Must keep up appearances while making sure nothing meaningful gets done. It's fucking disgusting.

@Highdesert, yes, it will be used against us. What a waste of time, energy, political capital and money. Just what I expected. Waiting for Clinton to declare her run for 2020 to make sure our party really knows the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Takes both houses to pass legislation. If Trump thought someone would praise him, he would sell out gunners faster than he has immigrants. If it benefits Donald, and only Donald, he is for it, no matter what "it" is.

Is it possible that Hillery wants Trump to be President? Why else would she think about running again.

It's literally US against them.....it's the US Citizens against the Oligarchy controlled Government. Why is it that all the candidates are now Billionaires again? Oh yeah...it's US against them. And anyone that thinks the Republicans will not pile on to disarm Americans is dreaming as well. They want the guns for the same reason all Oligarchs and Tyrants want yer guns.

Yup, I've been saying EXACTLY the same thing. "When guns are racist-bigot thugged, only racist-bigot thugs will have them!"

By focusing on things you have suggested, one would step on quite a few Wall Street toes.

I am going to wait and see if the NRA can manage to induce a panic over this gun control talk that is going to be pushed by the House of Representatives (I have been wanting to ”cash out” regarding a good portion of my firearm collection for some time, so perhaps I may get more for selling guns if I wait a bit longer).

I wonder how many/what percentage of Democratic Party members/voters actually support this concept? Most? Some? A few?

My personal opinion is that restricting rights and making more laws that take more stuff away from people will actually increase the number of whack jobs killing/mass murdering. I'm under the impression that our out of control Government is more responsible for driving folks over the edge to crazy than the possession of weapons.

Can anyone really believe that we can restrict ownership of scary devices and solve the mass murder problem? I don't understand how 21st century humans think, rationalize, act.

The vast majority, in all likelihood.

Solving a "mass murder problem" is not nor ever has been the goal.

What is the goal of Democrats in regards to gun control? I always assumed that they believed they would stop violence done with guns by making them harder (impossible) to get. What is the real agenda?

The real agenda has always been to disarm the working class, especially in these times where millions are questioning capitalism and starting to call themselves socialists.

It is what it seems like. trust me I have felt that way many times in the past. Right now I believe it is just a vanity issue, they have been spanked many times over the last 40 years by the nra.

Neither party cares about making a safe environment for us and our kids, only winning a scrimmage. They feel that this is the time and the media has primed it. Every state house in the country that is controlled by the dems is going to go all out after the first of the year for gun control. Every candidate who wants to have an endorsement by the dem party will have to go along or they are on their own.

Now is the time to let these people know that there are other choices out there besides the dem party or the repug party. They are taking their cue from strategists that the time is right to actually beat the nra. That is the plum they want to grab off the tree. Although I don't like the nra and haven't been a member since 82 I also do not believe they are the problem with our society.

That was my assumption but most of the Democrats I talk to on a regular basis tell me that "it's time....way past time" to save the children and make society safe by getting rid of dangerous guns like AR-15s and scary "Military" guns but we all know this won't work and will probably make matters worse. Nobody will be safer but most Democrats I know want guns gone.

I appreciate the response. I'm struggling with how to move forward politically as both controlling parties and 90% of their candidates are just not for me.

I dunno what to do/how to vote anymore. I'm am uber Liberal gun owner and rabid shooter/trainer with firearms. The Republicans are Fascists that want to herd us into a camp and exterminate anyone who doesn't worship money, power, and control and the Democrats want to disarm me so I can't fight back or protect my Family. :weep:

Yeah, you never know when you might get a real shot at passing it--then you're like the dog chasing the car who finally caught it---and doesn't know what to do with it!
See: Republicans when they could ACTUALLY pass the ACA repeal! They balked.

US House Democrats will introduce a bill to ban private sales.
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 ... nd-checks/
House Democrats plan to prioritize a bill that will require a background check for every gun sale, according to multiple sources close to the matter. The legislation represents an aggressive shift in strategy by Democrats and their gun reform allies, who in previous years had tended to pursue more modest background check bills that would have exempted large numbers of gun purchases.

Federal law currently only requires licensed firearm retailers, such as gun stores or hunting shops, to run the would-be buyer through the FBI’s National Instant Background Check System. This means any firearms purchased outside those venues—on the internet or from a private dealer at a gun show, for instance—can be sold without taking that step. According to a 2017 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, which was funded in part by supporters of gun control, 22 percent of US gun owners obtained a firearm without a background check over the past two years.

Attempts to strengthen background checks have languished at the federal level since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 26 dead. In the wake of the massacre, the Senate failed to pass a bipartisan measure sponsored by Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) that would have partially closed the private gun sale loophole but would not have required background checks when family and friends wanted to sell firearms to one another. Though Manchin proclaimed at the time that “if you’re a law-abiding gun owner, you’ll love this bill,” an intense lobbying campaign by the National Rifle Association destroyed its prospects.

The bill does not ban private sales. It requires the buyer to go through a background check. Just to clarify.

Universal background checks for all sales? I could go for that. Now let's compromise and include concealed carry reciprocity too.

Silly wabbit. Compromise is for reasonable people that don't have tons of money, attorneys and hired guns to keep them safe. ;)
