Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signs bill to preempt federal gun laws
The group Moms Demand Action assembled outside the executive tower on Tuesday. They were hoping to convince the governor to veto HB 2111. In his office, nine floors up, Governor Ducey signed the bill.

“We know there is nothing silly about anything that would make us less safe and that’s what this law will ultimately do,” Steffanie Richardson of Moms Demand Action said. “So we were trying to prevent that. We wanted the governor to recognize that and veto it. Unfortunately, he signed into law.”

HB 2111 is a pre-emptive strike by the Arizona Legislature to block any type of federal gun reform that its supporters say endangers the second amendment. During a February committee hearing, the bill’s sponsor State Representative Leo Biasiucci of Lake Havasu City said, “we in the state of Arizona don’t want the federal government to infringe on our second amendment rights regardless whether it’s banning background checks or AR15’s it’s up to the state to decide that.”

In the hierarchy of laws, states asserting preemption lose but it always depends on who is enforcing the federal laws. If the feds pursue AZ, the winners are Republicans.

AZ gets one more House seat under reapportionment and it's up to the solid Republican legislature and the governor to draw the new district maps. Biden won AZ in 2020, but he's not a shoe in for 2024.

We are a very conservative, rural state by the very nature of the land and history. We are far from big city politics and large universities which tend to push voters blue. Even the heavily Hispanic vote, as high desert says, cannot be taken for granted.

The GOP and Gov Ducy capitalized on the firearms issue to make AZ voters fearful and regressive. And yet we have Senator Kelly now having taken the reigns of politics from his wife who was nearly killed by “gun violence”, more accurately shot in the head by a lunatic with a Glock. Everything Libs fear about mass shootings and guns (and truly high cap 30 round pistol magazines) is summed up by the attack in a congressional meet & greet at a Tucson Safeway shopping center.

AZ would be a fascinating case study for fear and irrationality in laws and politics... if it weren’t my own backyard!

The western part of AZ is very conservative along with other parts of the state. Speculation is that Ducey would be the best candidate to run against Kelly in 2022, Ducey is termed out. Ducey will have to defend his handling of the pandemic and Kelly will be defending the Biden administration. Could be interesting to watch.
