Three gun measures advance in Roundhouse
A spokeswoman for Lujan Grisham, a Democrat who took office in January, said the governor supports all three bills and is hopeful the background check legislation will arrive at her desk soon so she can sign it into law.

“The governor is entirely confident that this common-sense gun legislation will withstand any potential legal scrutiny as they are entirely constitutional, despite what some critics may insist,” Lujan Grisham spokeswoman Nora Sackett said.
But this year could be different, since Democrats expanded their majority in the House in last year’s election and Lujan Grisham included gun control measures in her platform while running for governor.

The Latest: Gov. Signs Bill to Expand Gun Background Checks
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed a bill that will expand mandatory background checks on firearms sales to include transactions between private individuals.

The bill was signed into law Friday after weeks of divisive debate over the constitutional rights of gun owners, school safety and gun violence.

The governor, a Democrat who took office in January, commended the bill's Democratic sponsors, students and other gun-reform advocates who pushed for the bill's passage.

Everytown for Gun Safety gave $400,000 to New Mexico Democrats
Asked for comment about the $11,000 in contributions to Lujan Grisham, Tripp Stelnicki, a spokesman for the governor, said in an email Wednesday that Everytown is “a good organization and what they fight for is not controversial.”
After Lujan Grisham, the New Mexico candidate who got the most Everytown money was House Speaker Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, who received two contributions totalling $8,000. The larger check, for $5,500, went to the Brian Egolf Speaker Fund.

Other local-area lawmakers who received contributions include Reps. Andrea Romero, and Matthew McQueen, both D-Santa Fe, and Christine Chandler, D-Los Alamos. Each received contributions of $2,500 from Everytown, as did more than 20 other Democratic House candidates.
