Do not recommend: Winchester USA Forged Steel Case

Post by JaxTeller »

Absolute pile of rubbish. Picked up some at local Walmart. Cheap, but that is about it.

Shoots fine when it does, which isn't saying much. Had more than a few jams, where the slide was almost to battery, with a live round stuck in the chamber. Was a bear to clear, almost like the extractor did not like the round. Not fun!

Happened with the Walther Creed and the Beretta PX4 Storm. Won't be buying again.Image

I have to admit, I refuse to buy any Winchester ammo at all. 22, White Box centrefire - anything.

I liked it for a while, but lately (last 6 months or so) I wouldn’t take it if they were giving it away. Winchester White Box is still decent, but I definitely prefer Remington UMC when it comes to bargain range ammo these days. Hell, I’ll take Tulammo over it,

Yeah steel case is a no-go for me. When buying in bulk online, and especially when you catch sales and rebates, decent brass case ammo can be almost as cheap to the point where it doesn't matter. I never saw the draw in beating my guns up for a few dollars a case in savings.

Yeah, steel case only works well in combloc weapons with extractor claws designed for that. I shot some steel case in my Springer .45 just to see if it would run, which it did. Got a box stashed, as I know I'll never just whip that out for a range trip. I say nay on steel case unless there's an unobtainium extractor claw involved.

The Forged ammo is garbage. It's never worked well for me, smoky and dirty and more FTF than any other brand I've used.

The rounds are often not seated correctly and occasionally are very rough to the touch. I don't think I've ever had a fully loaded mag feed all the way without at least a few FTEs or nose-diving to a jammed slide.

Was at a fundraiser sporting clay shoot this weekend. Two team members were shooting Winchester White Box 12g Super Target and each had multiple FTF despite solid primer strikes using some pretty high dollar Browning shotties. Like 4-5 out of 100.

Used Steel Cases for my first range outing after training and had at least 10 jamups out of 100 rounds; switched to Federal RTP and even the process of loading the magazines was night and day. Same issue as OP, often the casing would still be in the chamber and a live round would slam against it, and now I have nice little bits of scratched finish in my M9. The wasters in Mad Max probably had better ammo than whatever this garbage is.

I know this thread is a wee bit old but.....
I just shot a full box of this through my P229 the other day. No problems with it. Certainly a bit dirtier than I like but no cost and it worked.✌️🐊
