We took a trip to the range last week and shot about 150 rounds each through our M&P shield 9 and CZ SP-01. The ammo performed nicely, only one FTF on the shield and I totally limp wristed it so I can’t blame it on the ammo.
Got home and stripped the pistols down to clean them and both had tiny little brass colored bits inside. Is this normal? I don’t recall seeing this with some fmj Remington ammo I used before. Can’t blame it on the gun shaving bullets unless both are doing it. Just wondering if I should move on to another brand when these are gone.

3Could be copper, colorblind me can’t really tell the difference. I’ll get a pic after the next day at the range.

6Seems to be mostly circular pieces, maybe some kind of coating coming off the primer? Can’t say I’m thrilled to think about it building up in the working bits down below.

7Unburnt powder, I think.

Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
9agree. cant imagine anything else in there like that.
i'm retired. what's your excuse?
Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
13I shoot a lot of S&B in my .45's.
They all like it. I don't see any of that stuff, maybe particular to 9mm.
The MAC-10 likes it way much.
Not bad fodder for $275/1K delivered.

Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
14Interesting. So now my question is is this unburnt powder or skeleton ash? I suppose it should crumble on contact if it's ash, I'll report back after cleaning up. I also have some S&B JHP that I have yet to shoot so we'll see if it does the same thing.
Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
15What does the fired brass look like? If they're sooty, it maybe a sign of low pressure, i.e. the case didn't expand enough.
Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
16The fired brass is fairly clean, but definitely gold dust inside afterwards...

17Cellulose Filler. Some powders have it. I know IMR uses it in 4227.
Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
18Cellulose filler seems like a good explanation. I got a few pieces out, too durable to be ash but deteriorated a bit under flame. Still not thrilled with the potential for gunk buildup, so I think I’ll find something different for the range when this box is done.

19send your pics to S&B along with the lot # from the box and see what they say.

I contacted them today and they confirmed that it is an inert filler and while it usually burns or gets thrown down barrel, some batches seem to have a bit more than others. They assured me that it won’t effect performance but I’m still not hot on the idea of a bunch of wood chips in my gun.

Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
21I’ve used S&B 115 & 124 and is one of my favorites...never had that on my pistol afterwards. Just FYI, BassPro/Cabelas sells Herter’s select grade ammo (115gr) for 9.99 a box and its made by S&B. It’s my go to range ammo when in stock. There’s some weird glitch on their website that won’t let me ship to the store or my house in Florida. There’s no shipping restrictions here because I’ve been buying from luckygunner for years.

Re: S&B 124gr FMJ bits in gun
22Yes, I get that a lot with S&B (particularly when I was shooting .32ACP and 7.62 Nagant ESPECIALLY). I've seen it with couple other lower end brands too. It's annoying, but as long as you're cleaning your gun regularly, it makes it cheaper to shoot.
