.38 cbc spl short. What gun does this ammo go into?

Post by Pomme »

Someone at the range gave a box of ammo that says .38 cbc spl short. it is the length of a 9mm round but has a rim like a .38 special and it has either a lead or coated bullet. Made by magtech.

It is a modern equivalent of the old 38 Special Short and Long Colt. Originally they were black powder rounds. The newer Magtech lines were mostly for Cowboy Action and vintage revolvers. IIRC it's about the same performance as 38S&W (not 38S&W Special) but the same diameter as the 38Special.

In the image the 3rd from the left is 9mm and 4th is 38S&W then 38Special.

Handguns would likely be a Colt Lightning, maybe Colt Police Positive (not Police Positive Special) maybe the S&W DoubleAction Model 4s ...

Maybe even the Webley Mk IV.

They’re 38 colt cases loaded to be short target ammo for 38 special guns. The advantage of the short case is quick ejection for fast reloads in action shooting competition.

so I could shoot it in my Smith n Wesson 686? I imagine it would make a mess inside the chamber.

Not a problem if you clean it after using. You could get a ring just as when you shoot lots of 38spl in a 357 but remember that 357 was designed for little use.

That is the nice thing about reloading. I can use 357 brass and set the loads to 38 spl power. I then don't have to worry about the carbon ring.

True but these are short cartridges and their big advantage is twofold, short for faster extraction and less recoil for faster return and also to protect older models.
