So talk to me about M1 Garand firing pins!
1What do I need to know and do they break often? The little piece at the bottom of the pic dropped out of mine. Those are spare pins and a spare bolt. What should I inspect? What may have caused it?
I was leaning to that idea, but then I thought who the hell would bother to weld that pin and grind it. I think you nailed it.Marlene wrote: Mon Dec 03, 2018 6:13 pm Looks like that one might have been repaired previously by welding? Probably improper heat treating led to the breakage.
Yes it is.lurker wrote: Mon Dec 03, 2018 4:53 pm modifying that pin may well have weakened it to the point of failure. john cantius knew what he was doing and in general it's not a good idea to mess with success. is it the same on the other side?
Me neither. The rifle came from overseas, so who knows.lurker wrote: Mon Dec 03, 2018 7:36 pm not even i am cheap enough to attempt to repair such a readily available and inexpensive part. a replacement pin is 10 or 20 bucks.
True. And this was probably done overseas considering it was most likely a lend lease.Marlene wrote: Mon Dec 03, 2018 8:05 pm I’d have done something similar back before internet searches and credit cards and modern fast shipping. Why wait a month for a part after you finally find out where to order one (probably involving multiple long distance phone calls) and mail them a check? Your rifle could be out of the running for a month or two easy.
