Had time to kill today and went to the toy store. Tried to shoulder a Henry Golden Boy. It looks great and feels great, until it hits your shoulder.
How do you shoulder this dang contraption?? Between the curved brass buttplate and the 8" comb drop, I couldn't find a comfortable shooting position.
Is it just me?
Re: Henry Golden Boy...how do you shoulder this thing?
2Interesting. It looks an AWFUL lot like my Marlin 1894, same shaped stock and lever action assembly and I have NO problem with it at all! In fact, it's the most comfortable AND fun rifle I have to shoot. DId you keep your front hand as close as possible?

3the drop is about twice that of an 1894 or 1892

4Huh. That's depressing. Go for a Marlin 1894 instead, then. Easily my favorite rifle, even more than the Windham Hunter. Just friggin' FUN to shoot! At the NJ branch shoot a few months ago, everyone enjoyed shooting the "Cowboy Rifle". Mine is the only pre-owned gun I have, made in 1979. I gather the new ones don't have quite as smooth an action but they do break in.

5Rifles made in the 19th century were designed to be shot from around a tree, or from on a horse. You do not put it up to the shoulder it rests on the bicep just below the shoulder. On a horse you are aiming to the side with the rifle across your chest. They didn't sit around at shooting benches back then.

7That extreme comb drop seems to be unique to the Golden Boy. You can see the difference between it and other rifles on the Henry web site.
My Big Boy shoulders naturally with a pretty good cheek weld. I’d like maybe another quarter inch higher comb to bring the stock buckhorn sights into perfect alignment.

8yeah...I've had an 1892, 1894 and a 39a, and they all shouldered very naturally.

9I have a marlin 1894 with a strap on cheek riser and 3-9 power scope, because my eyesight sucks, not because its a long range rifle. As for the golden boy, the low comb and brass buttplate are just legacy designs to make it look more period accurate. I would recommend a 1894 over one of the new henry's any day, especially for reloading. Fingers near the muzzle is a big fat NO from me. There are some winchester models that work alright, but i wanted to put some glass on mine to better see what im shooting and better hit those nasty paper targets in the center.
