Re: Trump wants to buy Greenland — and has tasked White House counsel with figuring out how

NPR article on Pres Harry Truman's attempt to buy Greenland in 1946.
The administration of President Harry Truman pitched a sale to Copenhagen in 1946, in a story told in documents contained in the National Archives and revealed in 1991 by The Associated Press.

But the Truman administration did so under Cold War secrecy and no one learned about it for decades. There was no open bid and rejection as with Trump's attempt.
The United States opened negotiations with Denmark about using Greenland, and at one point, the American side proposed buying the island outright for $100 million in gold and the rights to a patch of Alaskan oil.

Because Truman wasn't an idiot, an ignoramus, nor a lunatic, the proposal was made as one of a series of options, in ABSOLUTE SECRECY and only recently revealed.

Unlike Trump, who can't keep a secret, and has his thuggish "I see it, I want it, I'll make her an offer she can't refuse" reaction.

Truman, being shrewd, was happy to accept the idea of "Why buy when you can rent cheaply?" and, ultimately, got what was necessary for US security without buying Greenland and without stepping on Denmark's toes, and without creating a public incident. Truman was seen as an inexperienced, ham-handed nit-wit when FDR died, leaving him as President, but history has revealed that he was anything but, quickly coming up to speed, decisive and able to accept the benefits and consequences of his decisions. His desk "name plate" reading "The Buck Stops Here" was emblematic. Only Jimmy Carter returned it to his desk, but both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama lived by it. Trump is the EXACT opposite. The only "buck" that stops with him is one that goes into his pocket--and there are far too many of THOSE!

The State Department, in a letter to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, said the move to reopen the consulate in Greenland's capital of Nuuk was part of a larger plan to increase American presence in the Arctic. The U.S. has a “strategic interest in enhancing political, economic, and commercial relationships across the Arctic region,” the letter said.

It also reportedly said a permanent presence would permit the U.S. to “protect essential equities in Greenland while developing deeper relationships with Greenlandic officials and society.” The letter stated that the consulate would be “a critical component of our efforts to increase U.S. presence in the Arctic and would serve as an effective platform to advance U.S. interests in Greenland.” The president in recent weeks has expressed a particular interest in Greenland and has reportedly floated purchasing the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the idea "absurd."

Trump then accused her of making "nasty and inappropriate" comments in response to his overture and canceled a planned trip to Denmark. However, on Friday he said he spoke with Frederiksen on the phone, calling it a "great conversation." State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a statement in May that the U.S. planned to reestablish "a permanent Department of State presence in Greenland" and would work with Denmark and Congress to do so.

The new consulate would open next year, according to the AP. The U.S. previously had a consulate in Greenland from 1940 to 1953.

In today's NYTimes Op-Eds, proto-fascist Senator Tom Cotton tries to argue why it makes sense to buy Greenland. Sadly, in the "Times Picks" of comments there's a slew of supporters all citing the same "alternative facts". The man's not an idiot, but he's such a fanatic he sounds like one.

Tom Cotton may have the credentials, but that doesn't mean he learned or remembered anything. Trump has a degree from the Wharton School of Business University of Pennsylvania and we can see by his record what he learned.

According to Cotton's US Senate bio
He graduated from Dardanelle High School, Harvard, and Harvard Law School.

Ted Cruz doesn't even mention his Ivy Leage degrees in his bio, Princeton and Harvard Law. They both shill for the right wing and people keep voting for them.
