DeSantis-backed school boards begin ousting Florida educators

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis put his weight behind dozens of conservative school board candidates across Florida during the midterms. Now they’re in office — and are purging some educational leaders who enforced Covid-19 mandates.

New board members in two GOP-leaning counties essentially sacked their school superintendents over the span of one week. The ousters were spurred by how the superintendents carried out local policies like efforts to support the rights of parents, an issue inflamed by schools imposing student mask mandates last fall in defiance of DeSantis.
And while not tied to the 2022 election, the school board in Broward County earlier this month fired its superintendent through an effort led by five members appointed by DeSantis. All combined, school boards with ties to DeSantis pushed out three superintendents in November alone — and each of them served over districts that implemented student mask mandates.

“We had a wave in school districts that spit in parents’ faces,” said state Rep. Randy Fine (R-Palm Bay), who earlier this year sought to punish schools with mask mandates. “And now the people who did that are gone.”

In Brevard and Sarasota counties, embattled school leaders have faced immediate pressure from newly-installed board members and offered to leave voluntarily rather than risk a vote on their terminations.

The boards in both counties now have conservative majorities who sought a change in leadership immediately after the midterms. Although school boards are nonpartisan posts, lines between Democratic and Republican candidates were drawn in many counties through endorsements from each party as well as outside groups. The newly-elected board members in these cases support parental rights while opposing critical race theory and teaching gender orientation in schools.

Americans love local control of education and this was openly discussed in the media during the midterms, that DeSantis the king of wedge issues was pushing his candidates in school board races. The state superintendent of public instruction might be an elected official, but local superintendents serve at the pleasure of their local school boards.

School board members are elected and can be voted out or recalled. Remember back in February of 2022, three school board members in San Francisco were recalled, they were out of step with voters and got the boot. Sounds like the school board members in FL were also out of step with voters and got the boot.

Florida sheriff angry school kids no longer fear having their behinds 'torn off'

Speaking from a podium in front of the Brevard, Florida County jail's barbed wire fencing, his gold five-point star badge and holstered firearm clearly visible, Sheriff Wayne Ivey announced it's "a new day," as he introduced a new disciplinary program for school children who he lamented no longer fear having "the cheeks of their ass torn off for not doing right in class.”

Just so there was no chance for confusion by students or parents, Sheriff Ivey was joined by Florida State Attorney Phil Archer, and School Board Chairman Matt Susin, who has ties to the far-right organization Moms for Liberty. All three "went on camera Monday in front of the Brevard County Jail in Sharpes to announce plans to impose the 'most prolific school discipline policy this district has ever had,'" which ClickOrlando reports as a "discipline crackdown."

The press briefing, where no questions from reporters were allowed, came just after the highly-controversial ousting of the popular schools superintendent by the far-right members of Brevard County School Board.

Let us guess which students will get the most disciplinary measures? Could it be minority and LGBTQ students?

That’s one way to look at the Sheriff’s statement with the cadre of far-right extremists standing alongside. But if you’ve read history and perused the disturbingly dystopic near-future sci-fi novels of Octavia Butler, you’d know that pandering to extremists who claim conservatism on their quest to dominate others does not actually bring you to any sort of center. It allows them to take over and cause chaos and purges on their way to ruling with an iron fist. There is a reason that negotiating with blackmailers and terrorists rarely works out: it is not negotiation at all but acquiescence that they seek.

I'm so glad to hear someone finally speak up about this and say what needs to be heard: that as a trans woman and a lesbian my rights and freedom are detrimental to the success of the Democratic Party and what really needs to be done is just tell me to shut up and get back in the closet.

Well then where do you draw the lines? Many cultures have terms for male, female and gender neutral sexes. What do you do about the intersex individual that has both the male and female chromosomes.

Also in the schools are we going to rollback the clock to the 1950s and early 60s? Where we had dress codes for girls that required dressed and skirts of a certain length, no pants or jeans allowed for girls. For boys no tee shirts as outerwear unless it had a pocket, all shirts must be tucked in except for those that had a squared cut bottom and buttoned up the front. Haircuts for boys that must be cut, not grow over the collar. High School and middle school no facial hair. These rules were in public schools. I was a senior in high school when the Fort Worth ISD started a pilot program to allow girls to wear pant suits to school in 1969-70 school year.

What is the center? You have those that still believe that the best days for the US were before Brown vs the Board of Education, Roe vs Wade and the enactment of the Civil Rights Act and to many the infamous 1968 Gun Control Act.

Let's remember what was happening at that time. I remember Whitman Texas Tower mass shootings, JFK, RFK, MLK and MalcomX along with the riots in Watts and other cities. With these events I could understand the Gun Control Act of 1968. As the people were looking for a solution. Same as when the first gun control act was passed in the 1930s, as the mob bosses were have active gun wars in the major cities with the Thompson SubMachine Guns and the likes of Bonnie & Clyde robing banks with Clydes favorite BAR.

I would like to see changes in the gun laws because the laws aren't working. But, we need to remember we have had gun control laws since right after the Civil War. Fort Worth was one of the first old west towns to enact a gun control ordnance in the 1870s. When you came into town you checked you gun at the City Marshall's office. Why? Because the citizens were tired of the drunk cowboys shooting up the town after driving the cattle up the trail here on the way to Kansas.

As for DeSatan and his ilk There is no hope for them. They want to see a rightwing authoritarian government.

I'd be curious as to what other groups you'd like to throw under the bus in your rush to the center in a country where the Overton window is pulled ever-right.

GARBAGE REMOVED
You are correct. The left, isn't. Not in this country. The 'left' here consists of non-corporatist centrists who think that appeasement works. They are responsible for the rightward extremism since they capitulate and are mostly company owned (barring exceptions like Bernie).
Regardless, this "both sides" garbage coupled with a willingness to throw a vulnerable part of society under the bus doesn't belong here.

Having a discussion about where the current dem party is or is not is a valid topic. That said, advocating for removing peoples rights, using the tired old, let's all just be center (right) while then going on about immigrants is a telling post about where and what you believe. To be clear- calling the LGBTQ+ community as not being valid, and that the extreme right in this country is all good for pursuing policies to further oppress and harm them is not going to be tolerated here.

Of course...I think deSatan's fascist policies fly in Florida but I doubt they will when presented to 'mainstream America'...Glad I don't live in Florida(or texas) and more.
