Rock Island GI 1911

Post by wpkato »

Looking to get one of these as my first 1911, in 45 ACP. Good to go or no go?

Anybody who owns it that can give me their feedback? Thanks in advance.

should be gtg. make sure you're ok with gi sights, as you are kind of stuck with them. also, don't count on being able to customize after purchase...aftermarket part can be a pita

As long as you just want a basic GI 1911, they are great, I hear. The ATI is similar. Good solid basic 1911 at a low price.

Anyone who trashes the ATI or RIA 1911 are not appreciating them for what they are.

Thanks guys

Yeah I realize GI sights are kinda crap.

Bit concerned about quality, seems unfounded. I can't shell out the $$$ for a CMP 1911 so this seems a decent first one

I owned one, it was fine. Never had an issue with it. Wasn't particularly into 1911's back when I had it and wound up selling it, but never had a hiccup.

The sights are fine. It is a good 1911 for a good price.

I have milsurp and older pistols with GI sights. I put a touch of white and/or yellow paint on the sights and it makes a huge difference. If you make a mistake, it is easy to wipe off and start over. I also use paint to touch up old sights that are worn. For example:

Another  from me on RIA, ATI, SAM 1911’s.

Since it was originally a .38, you could argue that a 9mm is closer to the true original design.

$448 + $20 shipping for a Springfield 1911 Mil-Spec in 45 ACP. They were running $20-40 cheaper a couple months ago, but still a killer deal for a very basic 1911 from one of the best manufacturers of "factory" 1911s. And this one should be compatible with most standard aftermarket 1911 parts.

You can also get some of the Range Officer Elite models at Palmetto State Armory right now for $699. Those models are quite nice, not quite custom shop but close, definitely guns you would generally expect to pay $1000+ for retail at your LGS.

Well. It is a Colt in 9mm if that helps.

The Springfield 1911 Mil-Spec in 45 ACP looks really nice for the price. It would be a step up from the Armscor RIA. It just depends on your situation.

If you can find the extra cash, that Springer is probably worth the extra money. If not, the RIA work just fine.

If you ever intend on selling it, the Springfield will get you a lot more.

i shoot a lightly modded SA milspec and am very, very happy with it, but i have tried a couple of RIAs and they give the full 1911 experience. i say "go for it".

Maybe try the RIA first. If you get the 1911 bug like I did, you'll get the Springer or something else some day.

If you already have the 1911 bug, then save up for the Springer or something like it. :D
