Dem Sen. @JoeManchinWV on Beto pledge to confiscate AR15s:

"Beto's one human being. He gave his own opinion, OK? I think it was very harmful to make it look like all the Democrats. I can tell you one thing: @BetoORourke's not taking my guns away from me. You tell Beto that OK?"
Beto doesn't speak for all Democrats but the damage has been done and it will be another Republican mantra in the 2020 election. Manchin survives as a Democrat in a red state.

It's not that he said it (He'll never be president). It's that the other people cheered. That's what will be on the campaign attack ads/internet. I'd never vote for Beto. Not just because he's an idiot. It's because he's a totally selfish bastard who could not give a rat's ass whether any democrat has a chance to win. He lost. He should just sit down instead of dragging everyone else down an indefensible rat hole.

And I think that telling striking blue collar union GM workers in Michigan that you want to take their guns instead of telling them how they are going to be able to pay health care premiums (or college for the children or the 45 cent extra gas tax our idiot governor decided to throw down as a proposal, etc.) is not a winning strategy. It's hard to hear Sanders' and Warren's good talking points over the noise. But I only live in a backwards  swing state. So. . .

"Democrats" with whom I work love to give unsolicited opinions on this, unwaveringly in support of Beto, and openly advocate the use of deadly force by people other than themselves to take firearms from those who dare to own them.

It was inevitable that, as the GOP moved to its fringe, some Dem candidates would move to the fringes on wedge issues.

Dems are not like GOP. Dems are not going to completely become a mirror image of the Freedom Caucus nutjobs.

The GOP is just trying to define the Dems as its worst-case opposite on abortion and guns, but Dem voters want unions, good pay, fairness, and healthcare. I really don't think most people are fooled. They know the GOP is anti-worker and pro-oligarchy. The media is not any candidate's friend and they are just trying to simplify complex issues in a way that makes good TV. Don't stress out too much.

I think most Dem candidates are doing a pretty good job all on their own at defining themselves as worst-case on guns and doing a pretty poor job on unions, good pay, fairness and healthcare.

Really dumb of him, he just wanted to stimulate online campaign contributions and didn't think of anyone else. Little different though from most of the other Democratic presidential candidates. Beto has a history of accepting contributions from all sources not all blue.

Maybe in California? Blame Swalwell and his friends.

Red State GOP ads are all the same down here: Beto and AOC and Omar. All about abortion and guns and immigrants and socialism. All fear, no solutions. Dems run on Medicaid expansion (healthcare) and civil rights. The choice is really pretty clear here. You have most civil rights and healthcare in California, so I guess the candidates have less to talk about?

Could be. It's also related to the fact I don't have tv, so no add bombardment.

The flavor of the dem candidates I get from national media, NPR and online news. Anybody who gets their understanding of politicians from ads is, well...

I don't have TV either and NPR is also a source for me. And online I use add blockers and video blockers, I don't want the commercial or political ads.

Well that conversation didn't go well. If he wants to engage he has to have a working knowledge of the subject or have an expert sitting next to him to advise him as he types his answer. Never thought Beto was the brightest bulb in the room.

Billboards, mailers, etc. Also, I keep up with the right wing media by just listening to co-workers and acquaintances speak. All they talk about is politics these days. "Trump/Pence good. Liberals evil." AOC... Omar... Socialism... and now Beto.... No way to escape it.

There are a number of conservatives at my work that will bash on dems but I haven't heard a single one claim to support Trump.

I guess he will go prepare for 2022? Maybe he could use some of that money to help defeat sunbelt GOP Senators?
