14.7" (pinned/welded to 16.1") AR-15 upper?

Just curious. PSA has a mid-length CHF chrome-lined "A2 light profile barrel" made by FN that is 16.1" long (after the A2 flash hider is pinned & welded).

Is the advantage to this setup the length? Some weight?

I assume a little velocity is lost (google fu shows not much) with a 14.7" barrel. The price is about the same as the 16" barrel same setup. Those things seem to sell out very fast, so I wondered if I was missing something. Considering the price of FN uppers, it seems like a decent price.

To be fair, it does look cool. Which is why I did it in the first place.
Smaller and lighter is one of the reasons I love the Kel Tec Sub 2000. I really prefer the pencil barrel uppers because of the low weight, so I wondered if this was similar in weight (and chrome-lined, CHF).

I miss my Sub 2000- no, not going to shave that much weight with the lopping off of an inch and change. My barrel is by Centurion arms, purchased through Raineer, who pinned the brake on for me as well.

I just picked up the 9mm version of the Sub 2000 for $311 because I remember when they cost a lot more (and it uses the same mags as my favorite carry pieces). Same reason I am picking up AR stuff at rock bottom prices right now. If you want a Sub 2000, now is the time. Prices are low and they seem to be everywhere. That is why I am looking at this 14.7" FN upper now. Panic pricing will come back someday.

I have spoken to several ex-military friends who agree that inches matter in close quarters. Not that I will ever be in that situation. I like it cause it it is easier to transport.
My favorite vehicle rifle is an AK74 with folding stock, so it is a small package. However, those Bulgarian AK74s are not so easy to find and replace. My Saiga AK74 is also not easy to replace. This 14.7" AR seemed like a most reasonable, well-made sub-$600 AR I could easily put together. I love the AK47 and 7.62x39, but I like 5.45 and 5.56 better.

After Charlottesville, I feel increasingly insecure. I guess I am overreacting, but arming up while prices are low is better than waiting.

I've been looking into barrels myself, and the 16.1" length with the A2 flash hider sounds like a solid choice if you're after a bit of extra weight savings and a touch more length. My friend had a similar setup and found it pretty balanced for accuracy and handling. As for velocity, the difference between a 14.7" and a 16" isn't huge, so you’re not losing much there.

I did try out a Binary Trigger once, and it was pretty neat. It gave me that extra level of fun in shooting, though it’s more about the experience than practical benefits. If you’re considering this barrel, it might be worth grabbing while you can since they do seem to sell out quickly.
