Right, so. Not sure it’s exactly a perfect legal system, but it’s the one we’ve had since before the revolution. One keeps what works and throws out what doesn’t. Monarchies work only for monarchs. So your point is?

Proper use of root cause mitigation would get these broken white men treatment. That is the tack I will take.
More specifically, Tarrant represents the dangerous convergence between broken white men and extreme right-wing media, bearing in mind that 100 per cent of all terrorist attacks carried out on US soil in 2018 were carried out by right-wing extremists, with the Southern Poverty Law Centre crediting a “toxic combination of political polarisation, anti-immigrant sentiment and modern technologies that help spread propaganda online”.

We can't advocate curtailing any speech. However, we can use free speech to our advantage, pointing out the efficacy of root cause mitigation as the solution, rather than infringing upon everyone's rights because a few broken white men were raised improperly.

From The Hyperbole About Guns:
NZ Confiscations Begin: Police Going to Gun Owners’ Homes, Jobs…One Gun Owner Dead
According to members of New Zealand’s largest firearm forum, Kiwi police are starting to go to gun owners’ places of employment, homes, and even visiting gun ranges in an attempt to gather information and get gun owners to relinquish their firearms.

Police are apparently trolling social media for leads on newly-prohibited firearms.

Additionally, it appears that New Zealand’s crackdown on semi-automatic long guns has claimed its first victim. According to Stuffwhich appears to be the New Zealand equivalent of The Patch . . .

Air rifles. Looks like this is based on the opinion of the local constabulary.

I, Inspector Olaf Karl Jensen, a Commissioned Officer of the Police, hereby give notice that in my opinion you are not a fit and proper person to be in possession of an airgun or an antique firearm. Police are currently holding the following described airguns:
  • 1 x Ruger Blackhawk .177 calibre Air rifle
  • 1 x Hatsun Striker .177 calibre Air rifle
My reason for this decision is as follows:
  1. I do not believe you to be a fit and proper person to be in possession of an airgun.
  2. Police hold serious concerns regarding your mental and emotional wellbeing.

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern on US gun laws: 'I do not understand the United States'
"Australia experienced a massacre and changed their laws, New Zealand had its experience and changed its laws," Ardern said, referencing the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Australia, in which a gunman killed 35 people, leading to stricter gun laws and a mandatory buy-back program for 634,000 firearms, as well as the mass shooting in New Zealand in March that left 51 dead.

"To be honest with you, I do not understand the United States," Arden added.

Ardern noted that New Zealand has a long history and tradition of using guns for hunting. "You can draw a line and say that does not mean you need access to military-style semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles," Ardern said. "And New Zealand has by and large absolutely agreed with that position."

Only 530 semi-automatic guns handed over, police say
New figures show gun owners are holding back on handing in their firearms, because they're waiting to hear how much the Government will pay for them

Figures released to Newstalk ZB by the New Zealand Police showed that, as of Sunday night, only 530 guns had been handed in since the ban on semi-automatic guns was finalised in early April.

There are around 250,000 licenced firearm holders in New Zealand and it's estimated as many as 300,000 guns could now be illegal.

New Zealand's Plan To Buy Back Illegal Firearms Angers Gun Advocates
The new law gives gun owners until Sept. 30 to hand over prohibited firearms and accessories to licensed dealers or police.

However, the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners, or COLFO, a firearms advocacy group similar to the U.S.-based National Rifle Association, has opposed the changes, referring on its website to the government's "knee jerk reaction" to the Christchurch shootings.

The organization has threatened legal action against the government for what it says are unfair prices being offered for now-illegal firearms.

Allegedly, they're up to 700 now.
Noncompliance Kneecaps New Zealand's Gun Control Scheme
As of last week, only around 700 weapons had been turned over. There are an estimated 1.5 million guns—with an unknown number subject to the new prohibition on semiautomatic firearms—in the country overall.
"These weapons are unlikely to be confiscated by police because they don't know of their existence," Philippa Yasbek of Gun Control NZ admitted. "These will become black-market weapons if their owners choose not to comply with the law and become criminals instead."

Yasbek's organization advocates registering all guns in private hands. But that won't help with gathering guns already in the possession of owners appalled by the government's attack on the rights of innocent people—government attacks, it's worth noting, that come in response to the crimes of one man who explicitly anticipated just such a response.

Can AR-15 owners avoid the gun ban with pump-action modifications? Not even police know
Gun owners are calling on police to clear up confusion over whether banned high powered assault rifles can be modified to comply with the new firearms law.

It comes as a New Zealand importer considers bringing in an AR-15 modification kit, known as the Animus, which can convert the gun from a semi-automatic weapon to pump-action. The AR-15 was the primary weapon system used during the Christchurch mosque attacks.

The converted pump-action AR-15 has a limited capacity and fires slowly, with every bullet pulled into the chamber manually by hand in a similar fashion to a shotgun. It was designed by an American company to comply with their own gun legislation.

Mosque terrorist was wrongly granted firearms licence due to police mistakes, sources say
The terrorist, who pleaded guilty to New Zealand's worst mass shooting in March, was not properly inspected by police vetting staff when he applied for a firearms licence in 2017.

Stuff has been told that, among other errors, police failed to interview a family member as required, instead relying on two men who met the terrorist through an internet chatroom.

The error was overlooked when police granted him the firearms licence, allowing the Australian citizen to stockpile the semi-automatic guns later used to murder 51 people.
It's OK. Government got what it needed.

The wrongful licensing of the terrorist was the result of a firearms control regime that was destroyed by years of mismanagement by police, a police source told Stuff.

Sources said police districts had for years underfunded their arms offices and cut staff that managed firearms licence applications; numerous projects to improve the firearms licensing system were planned at police headquarters, only to be halted before they began; and both police arms officers and underpaid vetting staff were pushing through licence applications without proper scrutiny.
Police declined an interview request on its handling of the terrorist's licence on Monday, and were unwilling to respond to Stuff's written questions about this or the handling of the firearms system.

A written statement, attributed to Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement, said police could not make further comment due to the ongoing Royal Commission of Inquiry into the March 15 terror attack. "Police is committed to a programme of work to ensure our administration of the arms act is fit for purpose. This is based on our own assessment of what we need to do," the statement read. The Royal Commission will report back on July 31.
Grab the guns first and investigate later. Can't blame it on a small local understaffed police department, NZ has a single police service for the entire country.
