Trump wants to buy Greenland — and has tasked White House counsel with figuring out how

#1 Post by TrueTexan » Thu Aug 15, 2019 8:13 pm

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump has asked his advisers whether it would be possible for the United States to buy the island of Greenland, and has asked White House Counsel Pat Cipollone if there’s any legal way to do so.

His advisers reportedly are split on the idea, with some of them thinking that acquiring Greenland and its resources would be a brilliant idea, while others have said that there is no way it would be able to happen.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, whose population of 56,000 people broadly have freedom to govern themselves independently, except on foreign policy and national security. America already has access to Greenland as part of a defense treaty with Denmark, and the U.S. military operates a missile detection base there above the Arctic Circle.

Since it is called Greenland, he thinks it would be great for a Trump golf course and hotel.

I am pretty sure it has something to do with global warming, arctic ice melt, and oil drilling. At least, that is what far-right pro-Trump twitter claims.

I think if someone jingled keys for 5 minutes, he'd forget about this scheme. He might also need to be told that ferigners live there.

Yeah, but they are Caucasian and Danish which is ALMOST the same as Norway to him--and he wants immigrants from Norway, being an "Aryan" racist.

(Funny thing: the TRUE Aryans are the Persians, not the Germanic peoples. "Iran" ==> "Aryan". Even Rudyard Kipling knew this.)

1803 the Louisiana Purchase from France; 1853 the Gadsden Purchase from Mexico; 1867 the Alaska Purchase from Russia; 1917 the Danish West Indies Purchase from Denmark (US Virgin Islands)...in 1946 President Harry Truman offered Denmark $100 million for Greenland. Natural resources plus it's strategic location would make it desirable. Don't know if it's real or if Trump just wants to stir up the frenzied media and point them off in a new direction.

Its foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen. During last spring's exchange with advisers, Trump reportedly got the idea after hearing that Denmark was having financial problems because of the subsidies it pays to Greenland. According to the Journal, Greenland relies on $591 million of subsidies from Denmark annually, which make up about 60% of its annual budget. The U.S. already has an airbase in Greenland, which is part of a state-of-the-art ballistic missile early warning system and satellite tracking system. It has also, in the past sought to derail China's efforts to make its mark on the independent territory.

In 2018, the Pentagon, alarmed at the news China was looking to finance the building of three airports on the ice-covered land, managed to block the move. The US, along with its allies offered alternative funding options to Greenland in an effort to dissuade it from an expensive deal with China. Concerns were centered around whether the aid-dependent government could afford a large loan from China, and if it failed in its efforts to repay it, could lead to China taking control of the runways, bringing in warplanes, creating new shipping lanes and gaining access to a wealth of resources in the Arctic. This would undoubtedly post concerns in a nation, such as the United States, which as is frequently noted, is concerned with maintaining its global influence and military and territorial might - in particular against the two other great military powers, China and Russia.

As the Foreign Policy journal writes, 'Russia and especially China are the only two countries that could plausibly take over and hold the territory of Washington’s allies and partners in the face of US resistance'. If either of the other two global powers ever gained the upper hand, it could see the balance of power shift. Such a shift could see China gain greater control over the economically dynamic area of the Western Pacific and could open Eastern Europe up to Russian control. While it remains unclear if Trump's comments around buying Greenland are more than just a show of might in front of the other global powers, there are a number of reasons the territory could be proving attractive to the US President.
The island's natural resources, spread across 811,000 square miles, could also be one of the key attractions for the president. As the climate heats up and the arctic caps melt there has been widespread interest in what is thought to be a rich potential of mineral and energy resources - iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare-earth elements, uranium and oil.

Research shows Greenland has been melting faster in the last decade and this summer, it has seen two of the biggest melts on record since 2012. Both warmer air and warmer water are eating away at Greenland, causing it to lose billions of tons of ice daily in the summer. And while a team of scientists and engineers are only just dropping probes into the ice to help figure out which is the bigger cause, water or air, one thing is certain, less ice could make the ability to uncover sub-earth treasures more feasible. With less ice, access to this rich pool of resource beneath the land could become easier - making Greenland a territorial interest for the global powers.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... nmark.html

Greenland is a self governing territory of Denmark so ultimately the Danish Parliament would have to decide and they could mandate a plebiscite of Greenland's inhabitants. It could depend on how lucrative the American offer is for the island. 56,000 residents could become very wealthy.

Yup, they very well could. The two mega police states Russia and China have expansionist aims. Russia took back Crimea from Ukraine and China's Belt and Road Project is giving them ports around the world for their fast growing naval fleets. Have to think globally. Canada the second largest country in the world has the population of CA and most of that population is within a hundred miles of the US border. The last Canadian prime minister was so concerned with protecting their arctic territory from Russia, that they built ice cutters to patrol the area. With global warming eventually there will be an ice free arctic highway and Russia wants to dominate it.

Buying Greenland isn't a bad idea, we don't know what talks if any are underway with Denmark. Denmark (16,577 sq miles) is a little larger than Maryland with a population of about 6 million vs Greenland at 811,000 sq miles. Besides Alaska, the US would also have a larger stake in the arctic to counteract Russia's arctic fleets.

Nah. Use taxpayer money to buy a piece of land for the coal barons and oil drillers to plunder? Sounds very Trumpian.

It's not a good idea. It's a stupid idea. From a defense POV, we already effectively "own" Greenland and have since DEW lines went in there in the 1950's. All Trump can do is piss off Denmark, and add to pollution. But since China and Russia have been grabbing/stealing territory, it's clear Tsar Donald wants his share. It's what dictators do. Mussolini tried to add Ethiopia. France took North Africa. Hitler went for the Sudetenland, Stalin took the eastern 1/3 of Poland and chopped off an equal amount of Germany to effectively move Poland west.

And the Soviets (Russians) stole a chunk of Finland supposedly to protect Leningrad (St Petersburg). Right now China has a dispute with a few nations over the Spratly Islands in SEA and they're building islands to extend their territory. Buying territory isn't stealing it, we bought a lot of territory in the past that's now part of the US. France and Italy were expanding their empires in Africa, the colonial era is long gone. Sewards Folly was a joke at the time, but no longer. Canada is part of the DEW line, we don't own Canada.

Doubtful it will happen, but we could hear more about it if Trump wins a second term.
