FBI investigating shooting at ICE office in San Antonio

Seems other stories have overshadowed this event.
The FBI is investigating after shots were fired into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in San Antonio, Texas, early Tuesday.

Shots were also fired at nearby buildings that house businesses unrelated to ICE operations, according to an FBI statement.

Previous reports including from local affiliate NBC 4 San Antonio had indicated a suspect had been taken into custody, but the FBI denied that was the case. The news report has been updated with the new information.

The FBI is processing the scenes and reviewing surveillance video.

"These shootings were cowardly, brazen, violent acts, absolutely without justification and a threat to our entire community," said FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs in the statement.

"An attempt to attack federal employees is a federal crime with serious consequences," he added. "The FBI will relentlessly pursue every lead in this case to find the individuals who are responsible."

ICE's San Antonio Enforcement and Removal Operations Field Office Director Daniel Bible said in a statement to The Hill that such incidents are encouraged by "political rhetoric and misinformation.".

"This attack at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Field Office in San Antonio is completely without justification,” Bible said. “Political rhetoric and misinformation that various politicians, media outlets and activist groups recklessly disseminate to the American people regarding the ICE mission only serve to further encourage these violent acts."

It worries me. Absent a peaceful way to resolve issues (perceived minority rule by voter suppression, gerrymandering, etc.) and the perception that the government ignores protests and is incapable of shame, some people may turn to violence.

ICE argues that free speech causes violence (“Political rhetoric and misinformation that various politicians, media outlets and activist groups recklessly disseminate to the American people regarding the ICE mission only serve to further encourage these violent acts.")

Protests, press reports, and free speech can show public opposition to (and focus attention on) shameful government actions. If the government has no shame, this is a problem. People may turn to other means of expression.

That should be no more or less severe than those for shooting at anyone else.

Never trust anyone who claims they'll "protect" your 2A rights who happily attacks all the others you have. I sound like a broken record (repeating loop for you youngsters) on this but we see it repeatedly. The supposedly "strongest" 2A defenders happily gut the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th(!), 14th, 15th, and 24th (Poll Tax--Florida GOP is pushing this).

They (ICE leadership) are portraying themselves as tough and ruthless. When an ICE guard runs over Jewish protesters and the protesters are pepper sprayed, when ICE is filling up internment camps with brown and black people (including citizens), etc. If enough people see them as a force for evil, this will cause problems. They need to understand that this is a democracy and act with some compassion.

I don't blame the federal employees. I blame management and messaging. They need to knock it off, tell the employees to act professionally, and they need to start acting like public servants.
