And all this is why I have decided, forever, that my only NEW caliber will ever be .308 because that is the rifle I pick up next week.
Of course, I started all this by deciding that .38 sp and .357 mag would be my only calibers.
Now:
.22lr
.380 ACP
9mm
.38 sp / .357
.30-06
and adding in .308 next week
I have more than one firearm in each caliber except .30-06.
And I also find that the "joy" of new firearms is diminishing (not the pre-buying fever, but the post-buying joy.) I speak only for myself. I just want to have the right mix and keep control of my materialistic / consumer self.
So we will see how long "forever" lasts :-)
Re: Resisting More Calibers
27For me, I also see a new firearm that I want to buy once in a while. I find that it doesn't take long to decide that it won't bring me any more joy than the awesome-blasting-happiness currently in my safe. Nothing shoots better (for me) than what I have. I did recently purchase a .308 AR-10 because I do get the urge to shoot something like that and the prices are pretty good right now. Other than that, I do fear that bolt action may be the future for all of us and may buy a few in 2020.
I'll admit, when I see an old Beretta that I don't have in a caliber I don't have, it really is difficult to not click the BUY NOW button. There are not many I don't have, so that makes it easier.

That is one of my concerns as well. I find that I have allowed myself to treat guns very differently than I treat other material possessions.
I am going to use the Marie Kondo method on my guns and only keep those that "spark joy" :-)
In the end, while a worthy hobby, and an essential for self defense, my overall gun buying got a bit out of control. And as a result, I have a few guns that are OK, but do not park joy.
[But DO stay away from the slide rules. They ALL spark joy.]

Oh, don't get me wrong: I don't think that everyone needs to, or should, limit things like I'm trying. I just have a propensity to fixate on things and go overboard.
Let me give an example of how it goes: I come here, I read the linked blog about the collapse of Argentina. I get to thinking, "hey, that sounds more realistic than a lone-wolf SHTF scenario. I might want to consider a pistol that is lighter than my G17, and maybe something for my wife." One thing leads to another, and I'm buying a C&R .380. I kinda like Star pistols, so I'm looking at buying a B 9mm. But I can't buy more than one every 30 days..... unless I get a C&R license!
In parallel, .380 is expensive(ish), but I come across the fact that it's about the same price as 9mm if you buy in bulk. But I can't get bulk orders easily in California. Then I come across the fact that if I get a C&R license, I can get ammo shipped to me in CA legally. So I start planning that.
Then the thread about the Newbie's Wish List comes along. .32 is mentioned. I think to myself, "hmm.... not more potent than .25, but the size will be larger, and maybe that will be a really soft-shooting personal defense option...." I wonder what .32 costs in bulk?
Next thing I know, I'm on Gunbroker looking at European .32s that were marketed to police departments... and if I have a C&R, I could get one of those cool-looking Llama .45s..... I always wanted an SKS which is C&R eligible, and 7.62x38 is kind of a better all-around round than 5.56....
Which leads me back here. No more calibers!
Re: Resisting More Calibers
44I'm fighting the urge to do no more than 22lr and 9mm. I might break down and get the Lee Enfield of my dreams and suffer to get .303 British.

4632 has its place, but just get something like a KelTec 32. Inexpensive, thin, and super light. It's a specialty/niche caliber IMHO. No reason to go expensive when a 380 or micro 9mm is perfectly acceptable.bajajoaquin wrote: Fri Oct 18, 2019 1:11 pmYeah, but can you list them in order of velocity?jimg wrote: Thu Oct 17, 2019 7:50 pm Let's see what I can recall:

Re: Resisting More Calibers
47I'm not really into a .32. I thought about it more after I wrote this, and if it's no better than a .22 statistically, and the only reason to get one is because the larger frame makes it more pleasant to shoot, then why not just carry a Buckmark? I do know that I'm not really into the concealed carry movement, and I'm really looking forward to it running its course so we can get some new interesting stuff to shoot. I'm just not interested in holding on to a tiny little gun in a full size caliber.
I like guns because I have liked guns as long as I can remember. They go bang. They cause a striking reaction when you hit something. Those are the things left over from my juvenile mind. The adult in me knows that I need to have things that require my full focus: motorcycles, surfing, shooting, fabrication. I'm happy to cater to that need in my mind. I just don't want to keep giving in to the purely acquisitive part.
Mostly, that just shows how I fall down the slippery slope.

48Whole bunch of “32s” out there. World of difference, and many flavors, between 32acp and 327 Federal magnum. And with some forethought you can shoot them all with one gun.
