SATX Dodges a Bullet

Shooter fired first from one of our spaghetti bowl highway interchange north of airport, then headed to airport. Very lucky police/security took him down quickly. It seems it was wild firing rather than targeted.

I'm totally against. At the same time lawbreakers don't give a flip about the law and tyro's are just as likely to shoot themselves as anyone. I do prefer people that know which end of the gun is dangerous.

There's no sweet answer for this problem. If there's a "right" to kba, then citizens can. Yet we have more than two centuries of gun regulations that have not been challenged successfully. The line is really muddy. And then you throw in states and what they can do.

This brings up training. We know training is a good thing. With two centuries of other regs, what about requiring training to carry openly or concealed? No training to buy and shoot and so on. It's just the carrying in public either open or concealed that would require training.

But of course socialism communism gee Willie Wonka and dog my cats once any hapless R gets a hold of that idea. Their wise men don't know how it feels...to be thick as a brick.

Thankfully no one was injured or killed, except the shooter. Wonder if the guns were his or belonged to a family member. The opinion piece on Cooper's thread was focused on a situation like this, someone who should not have guns because of mental health issues.

Gotta agree...training BUT even with required 'training' now, a lot of of it is a waste of time. My CCWP 'training' was a complete joke(NRA 'trained' instructor).
$90...about a hour of real 'info' crammed into 4. His pitch to join the NRA, his 'review' of the midterms(2018) and the ridiculous 'presentation' by some Carry insurance shyster was the other 3 hours. BUT, required. I took my keen little certificate along with $152 to the county sheriff and 5 weeks later..CCWP..NO training.

I always hear about the bad instruction cases. Mine was the opposite. A very informative classroom session with an exam after. Followed the next day with a range test/proficiency shooting exam. All this tells me is that testing and teaching is not standardized among testers and instructors. Mine never mentioned the NRA.

The ones I've had weren't political, it's CA so that wouldn't really fly with students here. The NRA certifies subject matter experts, they know guns and laws but they aren't instructors/trainers.

Carry has nothing to do with someone randomly shooting from a highway or at an airport. Nor does carry bill HB1927.

In Texas for the CHL the DPS sets the curriculum for the course, not the NRA. When I got my CHL they never mentioned the NRA. I had the proficiency shooting test the day before the classroom course. The course was mainly on the laws where you could and couldn't cary along with the responsibility of CHL as far as your liability. At the end of the class the instructor did talk about Texas Law Shield and liability insurance when you carry.

I Texas it is standardized. F4Fever must be in another state because here in Texas the CHL is handled by DPS not the local Sheriff. That is a blessing the Legislature did right when they wrote the law.

Colorado..altho 'blue' and gets some heat for our UBC and new RFL...actually getting a firearm or a CCWP really easy.

My CCW instruction was actually pretty great I thought. We got to use a simulator utilized by local law enforcement where you are surrounded by screens, situations emerge (like someone getting robbed at an ATM) and you have to choose when/how/if you use your weapon (a CO2 pistol with laser in the bore) and the scenario would respond to your verbal commands or use of force. Great instructor, totally worth the $90. However, I took that course after already obtaining my CCW..."proof of training" for that hurdle was an online hunter ed course offered through the state of Arkansas...not training.

Your outline is similar to mine. Mine was class first then shooting proficiency. It covered everything that needed to be covered.

I don’t see how expanding hours or making it more expensive serves any other purpose than to deny the disadvantaged the ability to protect themselves.

Doesn't matter. You can have a legal CHL and still get murdered by police while legally carrying. Philando Castile comes to mind. Or Casey Goodson.

If the laws are not enforced equally for everyone, every time, the law exists at the discretion of enforcement and we live in a police state.
