JaxTeller wrote: Sun May 09, 2021 10:06 pm Updating this thread since it has been a while. (Well over a year - but what a year it has been!)

COVID got to us - well not physically, but mentally I am in the pits. Things have been rough at work and it is time to move on. My father-in-law passed away in December and that brought about some change at a sudden pace. Mom-in-law decided to move away from the area and has relocated to be closer to her grandchild. That leaves us with no family in the immediate area.....

We've honed in on Gainesville and Tampa thanks to the input in this thread. Hoping to start the moving process in the next 2 months and we'll go from there... I know I said 3 years in my first post. But really have no reason to see another sub-zero MN winter....
While we have been luckier and better off than most, 2020 was by far the worst year of 4 dreadful years. Our plan had been that when our youngest goes off to college in 2023, we'll spend a year getting the house in NJ ready to go on the market, sell it (and most of the stuff in it) move to somewhere in the Palm Beach area and rent a house or an apartment, and come back for a few days every month, while living the rest of the time in our Abaco home.

But two things have changed.

Abaco has never been the same since Dorion (Sept 1, 2019), probably the strongest hurricane on record. If there was a Class 6 hurricane, this would be it. And then Covid. Crime has been up, even building materials stolen from the house going up across the street from us--and we're 16-17 miles from town. The government's ineptitude (and corruption) following Dorian was positively Trumpian--even police were stealing relief supplies openly to ship to relatives in Nassau. The Covid response has been better--the Prime Minister is himself a physician--but only because it couldn't be as bad as his handling of the 'cane. All of a sudden our retirement paradise isn't so much a paradise. We are actually toying with the idea of selling our dream, broken-hearted.

Then there's the new National Socialist Volksrepublik of Florida, where peaceful protest will now be deemed felony rioting, and voting against the new NSDAP is verboten. I expect the death penalty to be expanded far beyond aggravated 1st Degree murder. There is now NO WAY we want to move THERE either. I'd rather deal with snow.

Everyone move to Texas for heaven sake !!! Help turn it blue. Florida is a lost cause, sadly. Would be great to flip Ohio and Texas, then we could forget the flyover states boiling red.

We are keeping San Antonio and Corpus Christi in our back pocket. Wife wants to do the FL thing; so I am going along with it. A dozen MN winters for this immigrant has been plenty. Time for some tropical weather.

Re: Move to FL?

Tropical weather ain’t what it cracked out to be, take it from a guy who grew up in a tropical country.

The ideal climate for me is actually in the southern states north of Texas and Florida. I lived in GA for a while, and if I can find a job there I wouldn’t mind moving back. Keeping Georgia blue is an incentive.
Glad that federal government is boring again.

I got a call on the day I retired from a former coworker who moved to GA, she's someplace inland from Savannah. She loves it, it's close to her daughter. She sold her home here before she retired and was on the road quickly. She was a supervising investigator with 30 years.

I'm averse to humidity, so I'll stay somewhere here in the West where it's dry. Love the ocean but salt air is hard on vehicles plus the dampness and all those "Tsunami Evacuation Route" signs I kept seeing.

My BIL moved down there years ago--he's a prof at Georgia Tech. We moved my MIL down there about 7 years ago--close to him, milder climate.
My wife was the "Go-To" girl for their parents for 35 years, and her brother was the "finger-wagging" one. Now he's the "Go-To" boy, but he doesn't mind.

I like the Atlanta area, except most of the drivers think they on a NASCAR track, and all the streets are named "Peach" or "Peachtree"!

Atlanta drivers sound like the LA ones, definitely following their own vehicle code. The bizarre thing I noticed about LA County is that street names can extend from the City of LA on the ocean out into LA County through other cities, but the street numbers change when you cross city lines. IIRC Orange County is the same.

Atlanta drivers actually seem more aggressive than LA drivers on the whole. They have an anxious vibe to them. Maybe related to the economic striving there I’m guessing. Lots of individuals hustling for a smaller piece of pie there in the capital of The South.

LA is still La La Land by comparison, where beautiful people can trip and be “discovered”.

But don't blow your horn no matter what in Orange County! Never seen such road rage as when I blew my horn at an asshole who boxed me in so I couldn't access Jamboree!

East coast drivers use horns as a communications device so everyone knows the light just turned green -or so it seems. Not the same here. Do that in the Left coast and you’d better lock your doors and have an exit strategy cause the guy in front is liable to get out of his vehicle and walk over to pull you out of yours...

Yeah. I learned that. I was more worried that what he'd pull out wasn't me but a gun. No fucking clue why.

In a locale where English and Spanish are mutually unintelligible lingua-francas interspersed with several East Asian languages, it seem that the car horn is universally understood as, “F-U!”

Or wake up the light changed or stop arguing with your spouse and watch the road or pull over if your kids are distracting you... Agreed, LA and OC drivers are agressive.

I'm going to steal your thread...or at least borrow it briefly. I'm gearing up to move near Tampa here in the next few months, accepted a job offer with a substantial pay bump (only reason I would move to florida) and am curious if anybody has any recommendations for housing/food/whatevs , I'll be based out of the New Port Richey area. I also am pushing to be out of here before winter hits, cause North Dakota winter can screw right off.

You're in for quite a change from ND. Among all the other hassles of moving to a total different environment and way of doing things, there are changes you should be aware of. One thing you need to watch out for besides the large mosquitoes is the Palmetto Bugs, overgrown roaches. In Texas we call them Water Roaches or Water Bugs, but the ones in Florida are larger and more aggressive having been known to carry off small dogs and large rats. :D

Where in ND are you? I am just east of Fargo in Lakes Country - and our plan is the same. GTFO before snow in October. :) I have been offered (and I have tentatively accepted) a job in SE Kansas. A bit remote and a lot slower pace of life.

As far as FL goes - good luck! New Port Richey is in the Clearwater area I think. Tons to do! Great food in Tarpon Springs. You'll have a blast! Keep us posted.

West of Fargo in Jamestown but not for much longer, gots to beat feet before the winter rolls in. In October 2019 I did some business travel to Florida to visit a supplier. There was a huge blizzard in North Dakota and it was 80 degrees when I got to Florida. Do want. If I had my druthers I would move back to Texas but this offer was better than the one I got out of Texas so here we are.
