Matt Gaetz to introduce 'National Stand Your Ground Law' as a tribute to Kyle Rittenhouse

1
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said on Thursday that he would introduce a "National Stand Your Ground Law" as a reaction to Kyle Rittenhouse's prosecution.

Gaetz made the announcement on his Firebrand podcast.

"I do not believe in imposing on Americans a duty to retreat when someone else attempts to commit a felony against a victim," the lawmaker opined.

Gaetz said that gun owners on a "stroll" should have the option of killing anyone who threatens them.

"If someone tries to kill you or beat you or dismember you, return fire and preserve your life," he recommended. "Let's reaffirm in our law what exists in our Constitution and the hearts of our fellow Americans. Stand your ground for America. Abolish the legal duty of retreat everywhere."

Rittenhouse's attorney recently condemned Gaetz and other Republicans after they offered the acquitted killer internships in Congress.

I've seen "Radical Left" as being "anything to the left of wanting to hunt humans for sport." I *think* the definition was made with tongue in cheek, but I'm beginning to wonder.
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

It would appear so. I can't help but wonder what happens to these arrogant fucks when the power grid goes down and the Cracker Barrel closes. I think 95% of them are far less tough than they imagine themselves to be.

The problem is in Wisconsin and also Georgia and probably texAss..if you are armed and somebody is trying to take yer gun, violently, you can legally shoot them. And claim self defense...

I really don’t understand your objection. Are you saying a person legally carrying a handgun for self defense is not allowed to shoot a person who attacks them and tries to take their weapon. Attacking someone is pretty much the reason self defense is justified. Fearing for ones life is the basis. Everyone has a right to defend themselves, that is the reason for the second amendment.
Note Lara’s comments:
https://slate.com/news-and-politics/202 ... house.html
Everyone has the right to self-defense in the spaces you’re in. The liberals who were there had the right just as much as he had the right. The question “Is it a good thing to let 17-year-olds who are armed insert themselves into these spaces?” is a different question than “Who has the right to self-defense?”
This pertains to all places where people congregate and walk in life. Of course observe legal restrictions, if a place is a no carry area, in which case it gets complicated. If someone tries to disarm me, I’d certainly not think they just wanted to look at my gun and chat about it. I’d most likely think they intend to use it against me. Years ago there were discussions even on this board about anti gun people who said if they saw someone carrying a gun they would take the gun away. Not a smart move regardless of who you are and what you intend. Mind your own business is good advice and be a good witness if something is occurring. You don’t know what is going on, leave it to the police if any action is needed. If you are threatened by the sight of anyone carrying for self defense, please seek the assistance of a mental health specialist.

On this topic, the law proposal is grandstanding and not needed.

One of these days we'll have a Rittenhouse type situation play out, except "Kyle" will be a black kid who says he was there to protect BLM protesters from racist thugs. When that happens, we'll see where Gaetz and co really stand. We'll also see if the justice system is as kind to black Kyle as it was to white Kyle.

All that assumes he even makes it to court. Truth is, in the above scenario I don't think "Kyle" would have made it past the police.
Whatever I said above, just pretend I included the obligatory “both sides,” especially if I said something mean about Trump (don’t want to hurt any feelings).

I don’t disagree that justice is not blind yet nor is it fair in all instances. As noted by others, a lot of work to be done. Still let’s not sacrifice the right to self defense in the process.

I agree, I don't want any of our rights sacrificed. We can work to make our system of justice fair for everyone while protecting all of our rights, it's not either/or.

Gaetz is the type that will egg on someone else to carry a gun but never carry one himself. He expects others to protect him.

I agree about the need to protect oneself from threats and the right to carry a gun. But, I don't agree that people have the right to openly carry a gun while threatening other peoples right to protest.

Read FBI stats somewhere back that unarmed citizens are something like 6x more effective at tackling and neutralizing active shooters than armed responders of any kind have been. Historically speaking. Lots of cases on record.

Now thanks to the Rittenhouse precedent, the most effective way unarmed civilians have to take down an active shooter has been stripped from them and used to justify their murder by any two-bit punk who wants to hunt people in the street. It is a travesty that will force escalation on all sides.

Bleeding Kansas comes to mind.

Not what I'm saying..if I'm walking around, open carry and some guy gets in my face and grops for my gun, I can take my gun out and shoot them. Legally, in Wisconsin, Georgia and probably Texass

Well grabbing someone's gun is assault and therefore anyone should fear for their life at that point. Sad situation it is but dummies are out there.

In such an incident, the lethal encounter has already happened. Someone reaching for your gun is a lethal threat. Once they have reached for your gun, the use of lethal force would be justified in all 50 states. In some states you have to try to extricate yourself from the situation before it gets to that, but once someone has reached for your gun, it's on.

Which is a GREAT reason to NEVER carry exposed. To my way of thinking, exposed carry is one of the dumbest things you can do in today's society. I'd rather someone just carried concealed illegally, than carry exposed.

I think a national stand your ground is a VERY bad idea. People in our society WANT to use their guns, and they WANT to make it legal to use them. This is a really bad idea... Anyone carrying a gun needs to go WAY out of their way to avoid any sort of trouble. We don't need laws making it easier for them to get into trouble, and then use a gun to get themselves out of trouble. This is the toxic side to gun culture.

I agree with everything FrontSight just said.

And I'll add one more thing that FS may not agree with and that I'm sure will get rotten tomatoes thrown at me here. Toxic gun culture is doing its fair share to fuel stupid gun control efforts. When a curfew-breaking minor with a straw-purchased gun enters a dangerous area, turns up the heat by brandishing, kills two and grievously injures a third--LEGALLY and with the blessing of law enforcement--and gun culture cheers on this disaster. Well, don't be surprised when calls for gun control amplify. And how does one keep a straight face and push back on the gun control crowd when everything about that shit show was legal? Not even a misdemeanor. I mean, most of us have gotten harsher legal rebukes for driving 43 in a 35 mph zone.

You may start throwing tomatoes now. But before you do, please note that I didn't say the minor actually broke any laws. My description is what actually happened (straw purchase and all)--but it was apparently completely legal (for a white boy). And also note, I didn't call for any more gun control. We all know that won't solve anything--that's our commonly agreed upon stance. Just saying, when gun culture keeps acting like gun culture, nothing good happens.

When gun culture pushes responsibility as hard as it pushes rights, well maybe something sane will start to happen.

I know I'm a broken record about responsibility and rights, but, damn, that felt good.

I've got the day off, and I'm going out shooting today. Because it's fun. Going to see how far I can ring steel with iron sights.

In most cases the open carry of handguns is foolish. I said in most cases, not if you're out in the boondocks, where there might be lions, tigers, or bears, oh my, camping or hunting. I would open carry. But in the semi civilized world of America I carry concealed. Like to keep everybody guessing, does he or doesn't he? Only he knows.

Actually I think you're spot on. No one seems to be addressing the issue of protesters in full battle rattle. THIS IS NOT GOING TO END WELL, and when that happens; it will result in calls for gun control.

Taking a long gun into a highly charged situation, where emotions are already running high and violence could break out at any moment...well, a person who does that is a fucking idiot, and probably shouldn't own guns. Take our streets back legislatively, not through violence!!!

These photos are not disturbing people nearly enough; again, it's not going to end on a positive note.
