At Least 10 Killed At Supermarket Shooting In Upstate New York

Details on the number of additional people shot at the Tops Friendly Market and their conditions weren’t immediately available. Buffalo police said earlier Saturday afternoon that the alleged shooter, who was not identified, was in custody.

The two officials were not permitted to speak publicly on the matter and did so on the condition of anonymity.

Police officials and a spokesperson for the supermarket chain did not immediately respond to messages from the AP seeking comment.

The gunman entered the supermarket with a rifle and opened fire, one of the officials said. Investigators believe the man may have been livestreaming the shooting and were looking into whether he had posted a manifesto online, the official said.

The official cautioned the investigation was in its preliminary stages and that authorities hadn’t yet discerned a clear motive, but were investigating whether the shooting was racially motivated.

The supermarket is in a predominately Black neighborhood, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of downtown Buffalo. The surrounding area is primarily residential, with a Family Dollar store and fire station near the store.

Witnesses reported the gunman was wearing military-style clothing and body armor, one of the officials said

Braedyn Kephart and Shane Hill, both 20, pulled into the parking lot just as the shooter was exiting. They described him as a white male in his late teens or early twenties sporting full camo, a black helmet and what appeared to be a rifle.

“He was standing there with the gun to his chin. We were like what the heck is going on? Why does this kid have a gun to his face?” Kephart said. He dropped to his knees. “He ripped off his helmet, dropped his gun, and was tackled by the police.”

Police closed off the block, lined by spectators, and yellow police taped surrounded the full parking lot. Mayor Byron Brown and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz were at the scene late Saturday afternoon, gathered in a parking lot across the street from the Tops store and expected to address the media.

Gov. Kathy Hochul tweeted that she was “closely monitoring the shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo,” her hometown. She said state officials have offered help to local authorities. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office said on social media that it ordered all available personnel to assist Buffalo police.

The shooting came little more than a year after a March 2021 attack at a King Soopers grocery in Boulder, Colorado, that killed 10 people. Investigators have not released any information about why they believe the man charged in that attack targeted the supermarket.

Collins reported from Hartford, Connecticut.

Then we have this
3 shot outside Milwaukee Bucks game. Two hours later, 17 others are shot a few blocks away

CNN

Seventeen people were shot Friday night in downtown Milwaukee just two hours after three were shot a few blocks away, near the arena where the Milwaukee Bucks were playing in the NBA Playoffs.

Ten people were taken into custody in the shooting downtown, and nine firearms were recovered, according to Milwaukee Police Capt. Warren Allen.

The 17 people shot ranged in age from 15 to 47, Allen said.

All victims in both shootings are expected to survive, he said.

In a video captured by someone at the scene of the downtown shooting, multiple shots and people shouting can be heard.

“We were waiting for a Lyft, walked through that intersection like three minutes prior and knew something was off so we ordered it to pick us up down the road,” the person who shot the video told CNN.

“People were in the middle of the street being just loud and obnoxious,” he added. “People yelling at each other back and forth.”

In the shooting near the arena, two men, 26 and 29, and a 16-year-old girl were wounded, according to Allen.

“There was a 19-year-old male taken into custody in connection with this incident,” Allen said. “Charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.”

That incident occurred around 9:12 p.m. close to the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Highland Avenue, about a block from the Bucks’ home court at Fiserv Forum.

Police did not disclose the names of the people involved nor a possible motive.

The Bucks lost to the Boston Celtics on Friday night – 108-95 – forcing a seventh game on Sunday to determine who will play the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.

Crap like this doesn't look good for gun owners in the eyes of the non-gun owning public. When things like this happens the public reaction is demand for more gun control laws.

Buffalo mass shooter cited racist 'Great Replacement' conspiracy theory in 106-page manifesto

The suspect in a Buffalo mass shooting reportedly live streamed the massacre on Twitch and posted a 106-page manifesto pushing a racist conspiracy theory prior to the attack.

"A man has opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York while live-streaming on Twitch, killing at least 10 people and injuring several others, local officials and witnesses say," BNO News reported Saturday. "A 106-page online manifesto, believed to have been uploaded by the shooter, explained that he was motivated by a conspiracy theory that white people are being replaced by other races. In the document, he says he is 18 years old and a self-described white supremacist and anti-semite."

J.J. MacNab, a researcher at George Washington University program on extremism, studied the 106-page manifesto allegedly posted by the shooter.

"He self identifies as a white supremacist fascist with Neo-Nazi beliefs who is anti "high fertility immigrants" under the white replacement theory. There are several 4chan markers," she explained. "He states that he was radicalized online on 4chan and was inspired by Brenton Tarrant's manifesto and livestreamed mass shooting in New Zealand."

Anti-racism educator Tim Wise says those who push racist conspiracy theories are to blame for the inevitable violence that ensues.

"The Buffalo shooter's manifesto rants about immigration & white birthrates, both of which feature prominently in mainstream conservative & MAGA rhetoric. And he embraces an explicitly accelerationist rationale for violence...hoping to cause further strife and societal collapse... Those who spread these ideas are to blame, not just the ones who pull the trigger," he explained. "There is nowhere else replacement theory rhetoric and logic can lead except for violence. It is inevitable..."

Fox News personality Tucker Carlson has been the most prominent proponent pushing the conspiracy theory. In 2021, the president of the Anti-Defamation League demanded Fox News fire the anchor for pushing the conspiracy theory on his primetime show.

It's never good for gun owners when there are shootings, the antis beat the gun control drums. So much for New York States strict gun control laws. I'm waiting for Biden, Newsom and other Democratic politicians to propose new firearms restrictions.

RIP to those who passed and a speedy recovery to those injured.

Payton Gendron of Broome County, New York, was arraigned and charged with murder in the first degree on Saturday, to which he pleaded not guilty.

In addition to the 10 who were killed, a group that included a retired Buffalo police officer working as a security guard, another three suffered non-lethal injuries.

Investigators are looking into whether the alleged shooter livestreamed the massacre and posted a white supremacist manifesto online.

The suspect is an 18-year-old white male who came from another county in New York state, officials said.

Local, state, and federal officials said they were monitoring the situation and assisting with the investigation.
Police were able to convice the suspected Buffalo supermarket shooter to drop his weapon without harming him, according to officials.

Officers surrounded the individual in the vestibule of the Tops store, where the alleged shooter began pointing his weapon at his own neck, police said at a press conference on Saturday.

The individual, identified as an 18-year-old white male from a New York county outside of Buffalo, then dropped his weapon and body armour before surrendering, they said.

A local story on the matter:
Buffalo's worst mass shooting takes 10 lives, leaves 3 wounded; attack called 'a racially motivated hate crime'
Of the 13 people shot, 11 were Black and two were white, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said. Most of the victims' identities weren't released as of late Saturday night. However, sources told The News that one of the dead was Aaron Salter, a recently retired Buffalo police officer working as a security guard at the store, while another is Ruth Whitfield, the mother of former Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield.
Police sources reported the shooter was dressed in body armor, had a military grade helmet on his head, was armed with a high-powered rifle and livestreamed video of the attack.
Turns out the "high-powered rifle" was an intermediate carbine.

The minute I heard the words “high powered and military grade”, I figured as much. Doesn’t matter in the end what was used. The antis will do the usual and no one will address the underlying reasons for this type violence.

Tucker Carlson (the Father Coughlin of our time) is laughing all the way to the bank. Watch how quickly they spin this to blame the left.

Conservative “news” is radicalizing home grown terrorists and they aren’t even being shy about it.
Whatever I said above, just pretend I included the obligatory “both sides,” especially if I said something mean about Trump (don’t want to hurt any feelings).

Hmmm. we had a grocery store shooter here in the republic. No mention of how or where these people got their guns(Boulder shooter got his legally). No use of any 'red flag law' for this or the other guy in NY.
(Or for the Denver tattoo parlor killer who also wrote a book about killing certain people, then killed those people).
Why it matters: Firearms were the No. 1 cause of deaths for children in 2020, according to new research based on CDC data, after decades of auto accidents topping the list. 35% of those were suicides.

Total firearm-related deaths, including both adults and children, also hit an all-time high in 2021.
Gun sales sky rocket, gun deaths skyrocket..what to do?
For ME..stay vigilant, carry everyday, everywhere it's legal. Carry something that is reliable, easy to conceal and carry for long periods of time in any weather, with any clothes. Easy and accurate to shoot. I aim to protect me and mine..LOTS of guns 'out there', many in the hands of people who probably shouldn't have one.

This is way worse than any 'anti-gun' person can do. As mentioned, 'maybe' address root causes but tie it to those who want to buy a gun..maybe? Too easy to just say, their guns were gotten 'illegally'...many, many were obtained legally. Guy published a 106 page manifesto about killing black people and nobody does anything?

Tragic, and fucking insane.
Looks like this idiot kid bought an NY legal Bushmaster and took off the mag lock. Unfortunately, if the media actually figures out what any of that means, it will just be fodder for the "no 'assault weapons'" crowd rather than a call to re-examine whether "featureless" rifles do anything other than provide anti's with a false sense of accomplishment. And yeah, fuck Tuck. That guy bears at least as much responsibility in all of this as the kid who did it. But the focus will all be on the gun...

Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham... are just whipping up their viewers like the talking heads on CNN and MSNBC do. It's all about revenue and ratings, they're spin doctors just like political campaign officials.

I agree with Crow, it will be all about the gun in the popular media.

WaPo:
Massacre suspect said he modified Bushmaster rifle to hold more ammunition
The suspect in the Buffalo supermarket massacre purchased the primary weapon allegedly used in the shooting — a used Bushmaster XM-15 semiautomatic rifle — from a licensed dealer near his hometown but said he then illegally modified the gun so he could use a high-capacity magazine.

The suspect, 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron, described how he amassed his arsenal in lengthy online postings that authorities believe he wrote in the weeks before the massacre on Saturday. He said he bought the Bushmaster in January from Vintage Firearms, a small gun store about 15 miles from his home in Conklin, N.Y., paying $960 for the rifle, a sling to carry it and some ammunition.

He also recounted how he acquired two backup weapons: a Mossberg 500 shotgun that he purchased in early December and a Savage Axis XP semiautomatic rifle that he received from his father as a Christmas present when he was 16 years old.
Badge-of-honor reporting.

Was the "arsenal" really comprised of 3 firearms or were there others the shooter did not mention because he did not intend to use them?

What Top New York Lawmakers Want After Buffalo Mass Shooting
“I’m sure in these waning weeks we will come together,” Stewart-Cousins said. “If there’s things that we’ve missed, we need to be able to tighten those loopholes.”
Assm. Chantal Jackson, a Democrat from the Bronx who co-chairs the gun violence subcommittee with Myrie, suggested that New York pair gun ownership with mental health evaluations.
“We need tougher gun laws, even though we have some of the strictest here,” Jackson said. “But they don’t include mental health checks.”

The usual suspects will push for firearm prohibition in one way or another, but they certainly as hell won’t push for outlawing fascist ideology or classifying its adherents as “Prohibited Persons”. Nothing new here.
