Christian Nationalists Feel Their Dark Prophecies Are Now Coming True

There’s a quote often attributed to Sinclair Lewis that has gone viral again and again since Donald Trump first ascended to the White House, fodder for liberal memes on Facebook and reposts on the platform X: “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.”
Summary
Christian nationalists believe that Donald Trump’s election victory fulfills their prophecy of a fascist leader. The New Apostolic Reformation, a charismatic evangelical movement, supports Trump and has played a role in fomenting antidemocratic actions. Trump’s rhetoric and the NAR’s comparisons to biblical figures like Jehu suggest a violent and vengeful agenda for a second term.

According to my nut job Sister in Law, who is a Christian Fundamentalist type, this is the will of God and signifies that the US is/has finally turned to corner away from Satan and back towards the light of God. She gets real pissy when you ask her how many of the ten commandments Trump has broken in the last 24 hours. It's kinda fun - kinda scary.

Religious people have a right to be pissed. Same as everyone else. They know Trump is an immoral man, but see him as a way to counter the ever encroaching threat to their beliefs and way of life. Once upon a time, there was an unspoken understanding in our society, that what consenting adults did in private was their own business. That, along with much of other polite behavior was scrapped in favor of in your face display. We don't like The Ten Commandments on public classroom walls for our kids either. Who has the larger complaint?

Cheney told us that when at the voting booth, your vote was "your own business". Pollsters got the public politeness answer, and the Democrats got the in your face response from behind the curtain.

I have "normal" friends who are advocates of a Christian denomination who are not happy about Trump. It's the hard core, fire and brimstone, God's Way or the highway folks who believe in Hell, and the "secret handshake" (you have to live by their rules and have the secret code to get into Heaven) type fundamentalists and hard core folks who support Trump.

You know, the people who think it's ok to murder abortion clinic doctors because they murder babies? Those folks scare me. I used to be a field service technician on audio/video systems and serviced many churches audio and such. I have horror stories about how some of these people think if they think you are a confidant or "on their side". It's a toss up with me as the whether money or religion is the root of all evil.

Trump didn't put himself in office. The end of history was announced a while back, for the umpteenth time. Now again. Good sport. The most embarrassing thing about predicting the end of the world is being wrong. If you're right, there's no one around to say I told you so. No upside, so why make that prediction?

One thing we have a plethora of in the US are churches, synagogues, temples, cults, sects...and other religious movements. Freedom of religion so people can believe whatever they like. There was an interesting online one I used to follow, "The Church of the Barking Dog" which seems to have disappeared. It was funny and very irreverent.

SiriusXM radio has been running announcements recently by the "Freedom from Religion Foundation". The ads are narrated by Ron Reagan, Jr the son of Pres. Ronald Reagan, who is an atheist.

I like that: The arsonist doesn’t get the last day if we respond with buckets.

I’d like to point out that much of the ills we see in society are actually economic in nature. People tend to retreat into the dark recesses of their mind when they are under stress. And social strictures are a way of expressing one’s divine place in the world when their lives are being reduced by economic woes.

The rich and powerful are the ones that won this election. They played the religious conservatives like a fiddle to get to this place in American Democracy. Most of us see this fact. And yet we cannot help but bash on the poor ignorant masses who handed the country away while we fear the rising power of oligarchy.

Maybe what is harder is actually the truth. I don’t have the answers but I suspect the way back has to do with helping neighbors for the American people to regain the wheel of self-governance. Maybe it has to do with more with helping the neighbor and less demonizing when the going gets tough.

I don’t know. I’m out of ideas.

I don't disagree with a lot of what you said Bisbee. A reminder of the note pinned on the bulletin board of Clinton's campaign office, "It's the economy stupid". Trump and his campaign saw the economic hurting, but Democrats who pride themselves on being sensitive to suffering didn't catch it. Republicans are now the party of the working class and though they aren't doing a great job representing them, they're better than Democrats. Every presidential election is about economics.

I don't recognize most of the Democratic Party now from when I was growing up, one reason I'm an Independent and not a Democrat. I wish the Party would find its legs again and represent most Americans and that includes the working class, but I'm not hopeful. They're addicted to not seriously having to raising campaign funds, billionaires, millionaires and wealthy professionals fill their coffers but there is a cost. I'm not hopeful things will change.

Yeah: I'm changing my registration to Independent. I agree with Bisbee that the rich and powerful won. This is because at least three yuge media giants sane washed his idiocy and held both Biden and Harris to a higher standard. Moreover, the bot networks of China and Russia found easy pickins in red states, where red voters believed obvious and verifiable lies rather than vote for a Dem woman.

on edit, the orange menace can't do anything until January, so I'm not going to bite much on all his malarkey until then.

My opinion is that neoliberalism has routed the Democrat Party and their platform and performance away from the people they expect to support it with their votes. They have become what they should not be - sold to those with money and power who want more. And they are less good at that than the Republican Party and it's buffoon of a leader. Biden was a poor choice this time and waited too long to step aside - Harris was a worse candidate than Biden (no one wanted her in 2020 yet Biden picked her from obscurity) and was rejected by the very people the Democrats thought would vote for them as the lesser of two evils. She's not....she's a failure as predicted in 2020 but the Democrats didn't get the memo. Or, their owner/operators paid them to look the other way, which they did. IMO/YMMV.
