Reopeining the country from COVID-19 lockdowns mean an unfortunate return to mass shootings. Such was the case Monday when police reported a high school shooting in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Police announced multiple gunshot victims at Austin-East High School, including one Knoxville Police Department officer.

"The investigation remains active at this time. Please avoid the area," police announced.

Knoxville Co. School officials confirmed to the press that the school was still on lockdown.

While parents and family might want to rush to the scene to pick up their children, the school and police are telling them to stay away for now and a reunification site will be established behind the school on the baseball field when given the all-clear.

Advance Peace interrupts gun violence in U.S. urban neighborhoods by providing transformational opportunities to young men involved in lethal firearm offenses and placing them in a high-touch, personalized fellowship. By working with and supporting a targeted group of individuals at the core of gun hostilities, Advance Peace bridges the gap between anti-violence programming and a hard-to-reach population at the center of violence in urban areas, thus breaking the cycle of gun hostilities and altering the trajectory of these men’s lives.

We really need more programs like this because we don't have enough data to ensure this strategy works. Cheaper than outfitting the cops with military gear.

Yep. There is a linearity-of-time problem for anyone wanting to lay this shooting at the feet of the new carry law. Also, not only does the law not include permitless carry of handguns for anyone under 21, which should have excluded the entire student body, but it does not allow carry by students in public schools, who presumably would be under 21. Most importantly, shooting people out of angst or for fun by those not in special classes already is illegal in all 50 states.

Officers responded to reports of a potentially armed individual at Austin-East Magnet High School around 3:15 p.m. ET Monday, Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI). Director David Rausch said during a news conference.

Officers found the individual in the school's restroom, and they ordered him out. He refused and after he fired shots, at least one officer returned fire, Rausch said.

The gunman, who was identified as a student at the school, died at the scene, Rausch said. Authorities said they are not releasing the student's name at this time.

A Knoxville officer was hit at least one time and taken to UT Medical Center, police said. Initially, authorities said the officer had non-life threatening injuries. But in the news conference late Monday, Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas said the injured officer is in surgery and listed in serious condition.

"This wasn't a school shooting, this was an officer-involved shooting inside of a school, much different. At this point, the student hadn't done anything with the firearm until the officers engaged," Rausch said. "It's important to make that distinction."

Rausch said "there were no arrests I'm familiar with at this time," adding that "if anyone was detained, it's more than likely witness information."

So if the police account is to be believed, it was an "officer-involved shooting," but Raw Story went with "mass shooting."

You missed my point. Clearly, the shooting is NOT a consequence of the law. But the law is certainly ill-timed and reflects an attitude cavalier of gun safety.
Once adults can carry willy-nilly, permit-less, without training, knowledge, etc. (and, my WAG is that it doesn't include a safe-storage component when not being carried). Carelessness of firearms, WILL become more rampant, I predict, making it MUCH easier for underage people to get hold of them, even though it's "illegal" (wink, wink).

There’s a number of states with permitless carry and it hasn’t caused an increase in crimes and misuse. Instead of creating panic and reinforcing the idea that carry is inherently bad, let’s reinforce the ideas of safety. Public service announcements, education starting in schools and such will go a long way to mitigate potential misuse. Most of us old enough remember wood shop , metal shop and drafting classes in schools. The shop classes taught safety and basic use of tools. Do the same with guns. Instead of keeping guns out of schools they should be shown under a controlled environment for what they are, tools. Working on root cause mitigation won’t hurt and is a must.

in response to a thread entitled "Mass shooting at Knoxville, Tennesee high school leaves multiple victims — including one officer." Normally one needs to actually make a point in order for others to have the opportunity to miss it.

Also:
1. regarding "ill-timed," neither the legislature nor the governor could have predicted this "officer-involved shooting" would occur _after_ the bill was passed, so again you have a linearity-of-time problem,
2. the shooting had nothing to do with legal carry either under existing law or the new one, and
3. the passage of law should not be based on emotion. That's how we ended up with the USA PATRIOT Act.

Not foolish to point out safety education message is a perquisite to reducing misuse. Perhaps a distraught youth might also benefit from a good counselor.

Again, it's not about chronology--it's about an attitude that ignores the fact that with rights comes responsibility. I frankly have NO objection to "Shall Issue" carry laws, the way I have no objection to driver's licenses and road tests. And, yes, I realize that Model Ts and Corvettes are not addressed in the Constitution.

I agree. It's still early but this might be another "suicide by cop" incident. We'll have to wait for more updates.

A kid with a gun in a school bathroom is more of a danger to himself than anyone else if isolated. Though dangerous, police intervention was necessary but I would argue the danger was still to the kid himself. I would agree it appears on the surface to be “suicide by cop”. But of course many of such suicides end up becoming mass shootings before the suicide part actually happens. Waiting to see if the kid was a student at the school and the back story of what happened. What a tragedy.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released preliminary details in its investigation into a deadly officer-involved shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School, saying the student's gun was fired but did not strike the school resource officer that had been wounded in the exchange.

The TBI identified the student as 17-year-old Anthony J. Thompson Jr.

According to the TBI, Thompson's handgun was fired during a struggle after officers responded to reports of a student armed with a gun and located him in a restroom.

The TBI said the student's gun was fired, which was followed by officers firing two shots.

Officer Adam Willson had been wounded in the incident, but the TBI said preliminary examinations revealed the bullet that struck him was not fired from the student's handgun.
