13 Injured In Downtown Austin Shooting, Suspected Shooter Not In Custody

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A shooting in a busy entertainment district in downtown Austin, Texas injured 13 people early Saturday, and police said the suspected shooter was not in custody.

Two of the injured people were in critical condition but as of the news conference at 4 a.m. local time, no one had died, interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said.

Gunfire erupted just before 1:30 a.m. along 6th Street, a popular area filled with bars and restaurants. The street was barricaded to keep out vehicle traffic at the time of the shooting, Chacon said.

It was unclear what sparked the shooting.

Eleven of the injured people were taken to one local hospital, another person was taken to a different hospital, and the other person went to an urgent care facility with gunshot wounds, Chacon said.

“Our officers responded very quickly,” the interim chief said. “They were able to immediately begin life-saving measures for many of these patients, including applications of tourniquets; applications of chest seals.”

Chacon also said some officers transported patients to hospitals in their police cruisers due to the nature of the scene, where it was hard to contain the crowd and get ambulances to those who were injured.

The shooter was not immediately arrested. Chacon said the description that police had of the suspect was “not very detailed,” but said the person was believed to be a man.

Investigators were reviewing surveillance video and other evidence from the area, Chacon said. He asked anyone with information on the shooting to contact police.

Well 6th street is known to be wild but not like this. Abbott hasn't even sign the Carry bill yet.

Austin mass shooting: 13 hospitalized after attack on 6th Street
In a statement Saturday morning, Austin Mayor Steve Adler said in part: “APD and the City Council have initiated multiple violence prevention efforts in response- but this crisis requires a broader, coordinated response from all levels of government. One thing is clear – greater access to firearms does not equal greater public safety.”

This could be his way out. Wait as long as possible. Hope something happens he can blame on carry. Decline to sign because of feelings.

No reason to associate the new carry bill with this. That is what anti-gunners do, so it would be nice not to see such misleading association of events on this site.
I'm not seeing a misleading association of events in the first two posts.

Agree. I and, I suspect, a few others on this site are familiar enough with the firearm prohibition horde to know those who hate and fear firearms will associate this shooting with carry because that resonates with their supporters. Had the shooting been done using an M1917 mounted on a tripod in someone's back yard, it would make no difference in that regard.

Of course the mayor had to make a comment,
"One thing is clear - greater access to firearms does not equal greater public safety."

The shooter or shooters remain at large, and detectives were working rapidly to view an array of video gathered by bystanders and other cameras near the scene to identify any suspects. Authorities say the shooter appears to have fired randomly.
It was very difficult to contain the scene, it was very difficult for EMS to make their way into this crowd," interim Austin Police Chief Joe Chacon said. "And because of the nature of the injuries, officers had to go ahead and use their police vehicles to put some of these shooting victims into their vehicles and transport them themselves."
Police told the American-Statesman, part of the USA TODAY Network, that the crowd in the city's entertainment district at the time was near the size of a "pre-pandemic" group, meaning potentially tens of thousands of people gathered in the area anchored by Sixth Street.

The Republic of Texas biker rally in Austin this weekend also typically draws thousands of motorcyclists to the city and the entertainment district.

At the time of the attack, "a large crowd of people began to disperse in the area," police said in a statement Saturday.
[Police Chief] Chacon said the city has seen an increase in gun violence in recent months.

"So this is just emblematic of that," he said. "And it's something we're trying to work to decrease."

Austin police have arrested one man in connection with an overnight shooting that injured 14 people, officials said. The arrest was made by Austin police and the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force.

The arrest came after the city's Sixth Street entertainment district, filled with revelers resuming post-pandemic life, again became the scene of chaos and bloodshed early Saturday when 14 people were wounded in a mass shooting that intensified questions about public safety and gun violence in one of the nation's fastest-growing cities.

Police said they had zeroed in on two suspects involved in previous dispute and were rapidly working to arrest them. Interim Police Chief Joe Chacon expressed confidence that investigators would soon be able to untangle more details about what prompted the gunfire and that suspects could face a range of charges that include attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Officials said they believe most of the victims, whose injuries ranged from moderate to critical, were innocent bystanders and said that he believes that no one had died because of swift and heroic actions his officers took.

Under age juveniles just like criminals can buy illegal guns whenever they want. Same in Europe or where ever there are gun restrictions. Only law abiding citizens obey the law, not criminals.

Thankfully there weren't more people killed.

...get a rope...

This guy is shooting folks all over the place, not just Austin.

Until these primarily black and Hispanic gangs learn to not make war on each other in public sans regards for innocents, the law needs to turn up the heat sentencing-wise (white gangs too of course, though they tend to take care of their biz in private more, some MC gangs excepted).

If the law doesn't respond seriously enough to all the public gun violence, it will never get better!
