One of Rep. Liz Cheney's biggest political rivals is a member of the right-wing Oath Keepers group whose co-founder was recently indicted for seditious conspiracy.

The Wyoming Republican is facing a challenge from within her own party after voting last year to impeach Donald Trump, and Frank Eathorne -- who was revealed last year as a member of the Oath Keepers militia group -- is leading the charge as the sitting chairman of Cheney's home state GOP, reported The Daily Beast.

“It’s troubling to see leaders in institutions that should be engaging in the democratic process not only condone paramilitaries, but officially join them,” said Lindsay Schubiner, program director at the nonprofit Western States Center, which tracks far-right extremism.

Eathorne has led the charge to unseat Cheney by appearing frequently on conservative media to denounce her, and he backed the February 2021 effort to formally censure her and presided over the vote to no longer recognize her as a member of the Republican Party.

But the indictments last week of Oath Keepers co-founder Stewart Rhodes and 10 others for seditious conspiracy complicates Eathorne's battle against Cheney, who is one of only two Republicans on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Eathorne was also present at the protest that preceded the violent assault on the Capitol, which Rhodes and his co-defendants are accused of coordinating, although he has not been arrested or charged with any crimes related to the insurrection.

“Certainly, there are people in the state party apparatus of my home state who are quite radical,” Cheney said Jan. 7 Fox News, "and some of those same people, include people who were here on Jan. 6, include a party chair who has toyed with the idea of secession.”

Belonging to certain groups, that advocate the overthrow of our elected government should disqualify them from running for office.

While Putin laughs at the chaos he sowed within the United States, Xi is actively using this as propaganda for democracy’s failings as an effective form of government.

Cheney should take a page from Tom Cotton's book and have a legit challenge to this asshole's candidacy, and file it at the last possible date to get him off the primary ballot when no one else can get on it. Or run as an independent and suggest Dems don't put up a candidate even though she MAY caucus with the GQP (no promises for not supporting her).

Trump's candidate to run against Cheney is Harriet Hageman, former RNC committeewoman. Hageman was anti-Trump in 2016 but changed to pro-Trump. She ran for WY governor in 2018 but lost in the primary. WY has only one at large member of the US House.

One poll in December from a pollster I never heard of, had Hageman 38% and Cheney 18%. It's very early and there should be some good polling out in the next month.

Linda Chavez who worked in the Reagan WH, but she is NOT a Trumper, she suggests like YT that Cheney run as an independent if she looses the Republican. Hopefully Democrats don't run a candidate.
n her last election, Cheney beat her Democratic opponent 73%-26%. Running as an independent, she would need most of those Democratic votes and then some. But if she retains the voters who support her in the primary and Democrats run no opponent, she has a decent chance. That will only happen, of course, if the Democratic Party and its leaders — including President Biden — signal it’s the right thing to do. But why should they?

Clearly, Cheney is no Democrat — but she may be the most important small-d democrat on the national scene. Her willingness to stand up to the insults, threats, and shunning the Trump wing of the GOP has used to drive the three-term congresswoman out of office makes her a symbol of courage and true patriotism. How many elected officials from either party are willing to jeopardize their job to do what is right? Among the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, two (Adam Kinzinger and Anthony Gonzalez) have already announced their retirements and a third (Fred Upton) is still wavering in the face of likely defeat in their respective primaries.

But Liz Cheney stood her ground. More importantly, she has become the most powerful voice on the Jan. 6 committee investigating the attack on our democracy — and the Democratic leadership in the House knows it. They have been eager to embrace her when she speaks out against the flagrant falsehoods perpetrated by members of her own party; now it’s time they take steps to ensure she continues to have a platform to do so.

If reelected, Cheney won’t be a vote for the Democrats’ agenda in the next Congress. I doubt she would vote to caucus with the Democrats to select a new speaker should they defy predictions and retain control of the House (though it’s unlikely that control of the chamber would come down to one vote). But she would be there to keep telling the truth about what happened on Jan. 6 and to warn that Trump’s return to power would be a grave danger to the republic.

Liz Cheney is the best hope for the Republican Party to move beyond Donald Trump. Maybe Democrats don’t want to see that happen — they’ve done reasonably well in the last two national elections with Trump defining what it means to be Republican. But for the good of the country, a two-party system defined by political ideology and substantive issues — not disruptive personalities — is the best chance of preserving American democracy.

Democrats aren't going to win the seat, better a have a more principled Republican than a lame Trumper.
