"Biden: US would intervene with military to defend Taiwan"

1
President Joe Biden said Monday that the U.S. would intervene militarily if China were to invade Taiwan, saying the burden to protect Taiwan is “even stronger’ after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It was one of the most forceful presidential statements in support of self-governing in decades.

Biden, at a news conference in Tokyo, said “yes” when asked if he was willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if China invaded. “That’s the commitment we made,” he added.

The U.S. traditionally has avoided making such an explicit security guarantee to Taiwan, with which it no longer has a mutual defense treaty, instead maintaining a policy of “strategic ambiguity” about how far it would be willing to go if China invaded. The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which has governed U.S. relations with the island, does not require the U.S. to step in militarily to defend Taiwan if China invades, but makes it American policy to ensure Taiwan has the resources to defend itself and to prevent any unilateral change of status in Taiwan by Beijing.

Biden’s comments drew a sharp response from the mainland, which has claimed Taiwan to be a rogue province.

I agree, Biden needed to reiterate this while in Asia and it does make him look strong. And it's not really a partisan issue, if this was put into a joint resolution by Congress I have not doubt it would pass in a strongly bipartisan manner. This tells China that while we're involved with Ukraine, we still support Taiwan and our Asian partners.

China is not ruled by a single egomaniac who pulls the strings of all the other oligarchs. The CCP are a band of old men who are actually afraid of the Chinese people rising up in revolution to demand Democracy and overthrowing them. Any rhetoric about military action is meant to scare people into keeping the status quo, prevent “breakaway provinces” and not to acquire more land or regain some mythical glory from the past. I don’t see any upside for a Taiwan invasion. And again, Xi is not a crazy-Putin. Xi has other plans for his country and his legacy, has far more to lose in lighting the world around him on fire.

And yes, Biden sounded shockingly firm in his answer. “It is our obligation.”

Xi Is a lot smarter than Putin. The CCP can afford to play the long game precisely Because they actually aren’t a “paper Tiger”.

They just have to build their force structure up, and in 20 years we won’t have the advantage of substantial amounts of combat vets still in uniform. They will have more economic power than us and reach with the “belt & road” initiative.

My thoughts as well. Xi and the old men running China realize their scheme of world economic domination through investments into renewable energy, wireless communication, trade routes and infrastructure via government-backed debts (economic-traps some say) throughout SE Asia and Africa, too many long term plans with too many moving parts to risk squandering on a single military exercise of futility for a lackluster island that has languished economically for the past two decades.

Putin’s Russia can afford to play military games precisely because they have no long term investments to speak of. The oligarchs have played their part in extracting as much wealth out of previously public entities. They haven’t put too much thought into their nation’s future and now resort to fascistic nationalism -inherently backward looking- to remain in power by selling mythical past glory.

Come to think of it, maybe all this rhetoric about Nazi’s may be a kind of unconscious projection. Maybe Putin imagined a kind of blitzkrieg to take more land and resources in Ukraine the way Nazi Germany moved into the Rhineland unopposed in 1936.
