Maine's red flag statute:
https://legislature.maine.gov/statutes/ ... 862-A.html
The Maine firearm prohibition lobby refers to it as the "Yellow Paper Law."

Police and prosecutors have used that new law at least a dozen times since it took effect on July 1, 2020, following its 2019 passage in the Maine Legislature. It allows police and prosecutors, with a medical professional’s assessment in hand, to seek a judge’s permission to confiscate guns and other weapons from people who pose a danger to themselves and others in hopes of preventing mass shootings and suicides.

Allegedly, the shooter had been involuntarily committed recently.

A man shot and killed at least 16 people at a restaurant and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, and then fled into the night, sparking a massive search by hundreds of officers while frightened residents in multiple communities stayed locked in their homes Thursday under a shelter-in-place advisory.

A police bulletin identified Robert Card, 40, as a person of interest in the attack that sent panicked bowlers scrambling behind pins when shots rang out around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Card was described as a firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve and assigned to a training facility in Saco, Maine.

The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” the military base. A telephone number listed for Card in public records was not in service.

Republicans in Maine rejected a bill this year that would have required a waiting period for firearm purchases.

They seriously could not fathom waiting 72 hours to buy a gun.

What an idiot, he thinks a firearms instructor and a military vet wouldn’t already have a weapon available.

From DM's Press Herald article:
Red flag laws have been promoted as a powerful tool to stop gun violence before it happens, particularly in the wake of mass shootings. Though an Associated Press analysis last year found many states barely use them.
Laws are all well and good, unless they're not used.

I would say a waiting period would have been irrelevant in this instance. We as yet do not know whether this gun was already owned or bought recently. The person of interest is/was a firearms instructor, so it's likely ready access was an option.

It is true that our health care system with respect to mental issues is sorely lacking. But, hey. Our Offense/Defense budget is bigger than the entire budget of most countries. The bells you hear ringing come not from heaven to receive the children, but from the cash registers of the military industrial complex and their enablers. Eisenhower was spot on about the MIC.

Would it have helped with counseling, treatment, and taking away guns? Over 22 funerals and dozens of ruined bodies would like to know.

The sun is up in Maine. I bet today they get him dead or alive.

The NRA is always saying, don't enact new gun control laws just enforce the ones already on the books. The media is full of a lot of speculation right now. FBI and DHS have sent specialists to assist. Lewiston might the the second largest city in Maine, but it's population is just over 37,000.

Yup, I saw an ABC news article and they're quoting Everytown stats. Our news media is contaminated with anti-gunner propaganda.

Of course this is the result of a failure of already existing gun laws. The reactionary pearl clutching public will undoubtedly respond with calls that more gun laws need to be enacted (and often ignored) as the only reasonable course of action. And since this dude is a MAGAt, the republicans will soon disavow him as an antifa/fbi/Soros plant.

Rinse and repeat.
The following statement is true: the previous statement was a lie.

This is exactly why I propose gun education in schools, including The Four Rules and air rifle intramural teams that move to .22LR when they reach eighteen. When people know about guns, they make better decisions about guns and gun laws.

I'm certain more gun laws would not have stopped this. I'm certain better health care would reduce these instances.

I think our society has become so broken and isolated we cannot prevent these events. Fortunately, they remain extremely rare. That does not help the victims and their families.
